Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Amazon Kindle Replacement Battery (for 1st Generation Kindle)Customer Review: h Summary: 1 Stars
i am completely unhappy with this product. i bought the battery because i was going overseas and wanted it as a spare in case i had voltage/electricity issues so wanted to charge it before i left. $20 seemed a small price to pay for the insurance of knowing i would always have a book to read while i was away-i was going to a lesser developed country. i got the battery and could not figure out how to get the old battery out. it seemed obvious until i tried to actually take it out. i looked in the user mannual-no help. called the Kindle 800# and the guy who answered admitted he had no idea how to get it out. he couldn't find instructions either. to his credit, he went to find a kindle to see the issue for himself. after several attempts, he couldn' get it out either. to get the current one out it quickly became clear that you would destroy the battery in the process. he had to agree it was a poor design and he couldn't get his out. he promised to let the knidle people know this was a problem so i would advise that unless you are ready to destroy the one you are taking out, don't buy this as a spare. as much as i love the kindle and i do, is as much as i hate this battery housing design
Customer Review: Average battery life Summary: 3 Stars
I own two Kindles with a total of 4 batteries (2 for each Kindle). I purchased the Kindle for travel, and the battery failed while in a colder climate during the winter. Now, most of the electronics I had did have the battery performance permanently shortened due to the cold temperature, so I cannot fault it too much. However, the Kindle battery, claimed to last for two weeks with no charge, wouldn't last a day of maybe an hour of reading while being on subways, etc., without dying while I was away from a charger. The dearth of batteries meant I did not receive the replacement, which had been ordered in December/January, until March, after the trip. With that in mind, and being a person who uses electronics until they no longer function, I stocked up on 2 spare batteries while they were available. The battery life is about 2 weeks, much longer than the original, and I ended up pairing the other spare battery with the new Kindle so each has a spare--as to be without ANY reading material is unbearable.
Amazon really dropped the ball with supply and demand for the batteries. Stock up when they are available, so you aren't stuck wondering whether the Kindle or the battery bit the dust.
Customer Review: Orginal battery lasted almost a year Summary: 4 Stars
Unlike many other users I have had my Kindle for over a year. I now need to replace the original battery. Unfortunately, there is none available on Amazon's site. I should have bought a back-up months ago, but didn't read the write-ups that many people said theirs lasted only 3 or 4 months. I believe it prolongs the life of the battery to turn off the Whispernet when not in use. I also turn off the power switch when I'm done reading, as opposed to letting it just sleep as some users do, and I charge mine between uses, not letting it go down completely. Amazon recommends that as well. When my pages start turning slower I know it is time to recharge it.
I hope the new battery has better life than the originals did, but since I am on back-order I won't know until I get it. Still the Kindle is the best gift I have ever received, just love it!
UPDATE 3-30-09
It finally arrived, after 3 months, with no explanation for the delay. I understand the Kindle 2 has a longer-life battery - yay for you new owners. You will love your Kindle. I know 3 people with the new version that already do.
Customer Review: What good is a Kindle without a working battery? Summary: 1 Stars
Having a Kindle without being able to get a replacement battery for weeks/months is ridiculous. What if a car battery died and you couldn't get a new one for the same unknown amount of time?
I can perhaps understand why Amazon can't keep up with the demand for new Kindle readers, but I just don't get how they could fail to have batteries on hand. What a slap in the face for those of us who forked over $399 for a "machine" that you can't use because you don't have a battery?
Ridiculous. I will NOT be recommending a Kindle to any of my friends, which I used to do before I discovered the battery waiting line.
Used to love my Kindle. Now it just gathers dust while I wait. Never again will I play this game. I'm buying a reader made by anyone but Amazon.
Plus, as all Kindle users know, the cover is a piece of work! Don't bother ordering a new one. Same thing as the first one. Just put your "do-it-yourself" imagination to work and make do with what you have. Lots of good velcro-rubber band types of solutions on this forum.
Customer Review: Battery is horrible Summary: 1 Stars
I love my Kindle, but I am so upset as I have not been able to read sinse October as they have no batteries in stock. I paid all that money for it, and now I have to purchase books at a book store because they have no batteries for it. Totally rediculous. The battery only lasted about 3 months, and I recharged it all the time. I have tried to order 2 so I will have an extra on hand, but to no avail. Sorry AMAZON you rreally should have better batteries, and certainly keep them in stock. THis is way too long to go without a battery. You keep sending me updates for my Kindle via e-mail...but I cannot download them due to the fact I cannot use my Kindle. I am very disappointed. I was thrilled with it, and highly recommended it to friends...,.now I am sorry I did not maybe buy the Sony. I have been without bei;ng able to use it sinse the end of October and here it is December 23...come on that is so totally unbelievable. Too much money to spend for something that you cannot use. Guess I loved my Kindle so much that I am missing using it beyond words.
