Customer Review: Hesitate to post since it's not a "review" per se..
Summary: 3 Stars

I too am waiting for my battery order to come in stock, but for those also waiting, I thought I'd offer some advice that's worked for me to get along until our orders show up and then I'll update my review once the battery shows up.

I had great luck with my original Kindle battery. It's managed to last a year and seven months so far. I always charge when the battery indicator hits half empty or roundabouts there, just because I'm paranoid about letting it wind down when I'm out away from home and trying to read something. The few times it's gone down farther, I've noticed some of the same issues that I'm reading about here - slow page turning, freezing screens, blank screen, the scroll button not working. It freaked me out the first time it happened and I took the battery out and reconnected it and generally ran around like a dork thinking I broke my Kindle.

Then I just used the end of a paper clip to push in the reset button and everything went right back to normal in about two minutes once the Kindle went through the whole resetting process and retrieving my books. I thought I might lose something but I didn't. And everything worked just fine. Now once I did reset once, I got the distinct impression I needed a new battery because I've had to rest a few more times in the last two months, so I'm trying to get another one, but for a quick fix, it at least gets it working again.

I apologize if this is something everyone already knows about and has tried, but it was new to me and saved me a lot of hair pulling and nervous pacing. I also have just gotten in the habit of charging up after every couple of books now, regardless of how long they "say" you can go on a charge. I notice downloading really sucks the charge out too, so I let my dowloads build up quite a bit and do them all at night when I can charge up and have it not interfere with my reading.

Hope that helps someone! I still think my Kindle, warts and all, was the absolute best purchase I've made in years. I can't even remember the last thing I've bought other than this that I've gotten so much use and enjoyment out of.

Customer Review: Kindle battery life
Summary: 2 Stars

As a Kindle user, and an electronic engineer, I am very disappointed in regards to the Kindle's battery life and their choice of the battery type. There is ample room for a much bigger battery, and a more advanced one, that could last much longer.

Even so, the Kindle's battery is much larger than a cell phone's battery, yet it can't last as long as a cell phone battery. A cell phone is regularly transmitting, even when one isn't talking on it. Most cell phones have a long stand-by time and at least 4-6 hours of continuous talk time. Try keeping your Kindle's wireless feature on that long! You will find the battery will die rapidly. The Kindle should be able to have a comparable battery life.

The Kindle's display type uses very little battery power to "write" the display and almost zero when the display is static. This is supposed to be the advantage of this method of "electronic ink." So, the battery should last much longer, even when using the wireless feature. The wireless is essentially using cell phones frequency's to communicate, so why does this big battery drain so fast?

My Kindle's battery performed poorly from the beginning and only got worse. I could fully charge the battery and after a week of not using it, I would pick up my Kindle and take it to a doctor's appointment to do some reading. I would get there and find out my Kindle was totally dead. Now, it "dies" within 3-4 days after being fully charged and not being used.

I am purchasing another battery, but I don't expect things to improve except in the short term. I'm sure it will be better to being with but will decline over time.

Amazon, fix this problem as I'm looking at a new ebook reader that was recently released and is basically a regular paper size piece of plastic and is VERY thin. The Kindle's redeeming feature is the ability to connect and shop the Kindle store. Some may see the smaller size a plus. But if the new battery performs as poorly as the last one, I will sell my Kindle. Buy the way, I turn the wireless feature on only long enough to download a book, then I turn it off.

Customer Review: This Would Be Great - IF Amazon Would Stock Them
Summary: 1 Stars

I ordered a replacement battery for my Kindle on December 13, 2008. As most probably know, the Kindle Reader - while nicely done for a V1.0 device - does have a few kinks with which it was introduced. One in particular being that the batteries supplied with them do not hold up for very long. Since mine lasted a good year and the replacement battery was not priced too high, I figured that it wasn't really that big of a deal.

Yet here it is a month later and still no Kindle replacement batteries are in stock. I just had to respond to an email message from Amazon stating that my order would be canceled automatically by them unless I logged in and approved keeping the order open. Huh?! Are they worried that I will become overly annoyed if I have to wait too long for my Kindle battery? How do they think anyone feels who has been sitting and waiting for a month with a worthless four hundred dollar paperweight that used to be a decent reader but now NEEDS a BATTERY! Automatically cancel my order?

I must say that I am really surprised and, yes - annoyed now - by the unavailability of the battery and also by the cavalier attitude expressed by threatening to cancel my replacement battery order because they do not have it in stock. I realize that the message is most likely an automated bot, but they really need to get a little personal when it comes to items like this.

Very disappointing, Amazon. Disappointing enough that I will not recommend the Kindle anymore.

Customer Review: waste of $300
Summary: 1 Stars

I got this battery replacement with the hopes that it would "fix" the screen issue I am having with my 1st generation kindle. It did nothing to help. I'm not as frustrated with the battery replacement as I am with the kindle itself. I received this as a very special birthday gift. It was purchased during the "Oprah sale" that ran when she featured the device on her show. I had the kindle for only 18 months when the screen gave out. There has been no pressure put on it, it has not been dropped or damaged in any way, it simply stopped. The only thing I could attribute it to was that I hadn't used my kindle for a couple months, so charged it up to use it but the screen was nothing but lines. Thinking it might be the battery, we tried this replacement, but it was not. We tried rebooting...everything. It is absolutely unacceptable that someone could pay over $300 for a reading device that would not last more than 18 months. And of course the warranty was only for the first 12 months. So now I'm stuck and my only option is to spend MORE money on a refurbished one? I believe this program is $89? Crazy when I could turn around and buy a brand new one for $139?!?!?! Although I LOVED LOVED LOVED my kindle, what a waste of money to buy the lousy, over-priced first generation device. I am absolutely stuck. I really like my kindle, but there is no way I should have to spend more money for it to last. Buyer beware!

Customer Review: Kindle purchases and battery
Summary: 4 Stars

My Dad had a stroke 12+ years ago. The Kindle is the ONLY thing that lets him read independently (1 side paralyzed, visual field disrupted), and getting it last year was a Godsend. HOWEVER: I have 2 major gripes, and they are MAJOR. (1) There is no way for other members of the family to purchase books and subscriptions for him for his Kindle (which we all wanted to do this Christmas); and (2) when the battery dies, your goose is cooked, because IT TAKES FOREVER to get a replacement. I ordered the new battery December 12, so that I would then be able to "play Santa" for the other family members when I arrived at my parents' house, and use my Dad's Kindle to order the various books and subscriptions people had in mind for him. One Big Problem: no battery arrived, and we hear only that it will "not be available by Dec 25" (no word about when it WILL be available). So now my Dad is unable to read, and we are unable to get him his Christmas reading wish list, and have no ides when that will be possible. No mistake: the Kindle is Wonderful, but this kind of bottleneck is way too short-sighted for such an otherwise advanced item - and for someone with my Dad's restrictions, the Godsend has turned into a Calamity. Let's hope it is short-lived!
