Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Amazon Kindle Replacement Battery (for 1st Generation Kindle)

Customer Review: Kindle Battery Dies too Quickly!
Summary: 2 Stars

I received the Kindle 1 as a Christmas gift in 2008. This is a very enjoyable product when it works, but it is an expensive habit made more expensive by batteries that just don't last. My first Amazon Kindle battery died after about 3-1/2 months. Two more replacement batteries died shortly thereafter and never kept much of a charge. I am on my 5th battery. I agree with other reviewers that the batteries hold a charge and last longer if you recharge before power runs low and you don't keep the wireless connection on more than absolutely necessary. Reviewers who had a good experience with their batteries likely never let them get close to depleting. However, if you are not perfect about remembering to turn off the Kindle, and leave it on accidentally long enough for the battery to die (and leaving on the wireless connection hastens the battery's death), the battery from that point on will either hold only a low charge or will no longer recharge at all. You therefore have to be perfect when you own the Kindle, and never forget to turn it off to keep your battery rechargeable. Kindle's hibernation mode buys you some time, but won't save the battery if you leave your Kindle on for an extended period. It would be a good idea for Kindle to add a setting a user can select that will turn off the Kindle entirely after a certain period of inactivity to avoid this problem.

I've had to order yet another battery (I am trying another brand this time) as a backup and eventual replacement, but do feel that the expense of the Kindle + batteries + subscription fees is exceeding its utility and convenience, especially during difficult economic times. I have read that the Kindle 2 does not even permit a user to change the battery, so the entire unit would have to be replaced if the battery goes dead. Now that's too much of an expense to contemplate when other, less expensive alternatives are available.

The lack of longevity of Kindle batteries (for Kindle 1, at least) is unacceptable. If my latest replacement battery does not last, I don't expect to buy any more and will use other means to get my daily reading fix. I also won't be trading up to a Kindle 2 as long as this problem remains unaddressed.
