Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Amazon Kindle AU (Type I, Australia) Power Adapter [Fits Kindle and Kindle DX]

Customer Review: Does the job
Summary: 4 Stars

I was looking for an e-reader that could handle PDF. I bought the KDX because of the screen size, and the low-power e-Ink. I like the idea of a reader with a one week battery life vs 10 hours on an iPad.

The screen redraw speed is just slow enough to be vaguely annoying, but it's liveable with.

Screen contrast and ease of reading is as advertised - I've tried it in strong sunlight and weak indoor light and it's done the job in all situations I've been in so far.

The large screen is very handy for reading magazine articles and PDFs. It's black and white but you knew that already.

It's surprisingly light, but it would get a bit much over time in a single hand. I've held it in both hands so far but that's what I would've been doing with magazines or printed PDFs anyway.

Biggest drawback for me is the poor organisation and management features. You can't have folders, you can only use "collections" which are really just tagging an article and then displaying everything with that tag. This means no nested folders which is a huge oversight. I want to be able to separate reference books by type (language vs tech, for instance), and I'd like to have an overall study folder with one folder per subject.

Even more ludicrously, if you switch to viewing the top level by Collections, they are sorted by last accessed. This is nuts! When viewing titles directly, either at the top level or within a collection, they can be sorted by author or by title, but the collection names themselves cannot. This would be a trivial feature to implement but I guess Amazon doesn't think anyone cares?

The web is full of rumours that there won't be much more software development for the DX because Amazon is concentrating on the 3rd generation. This would be very sad if true. That said, I did get a software update today so maybe it has a bit more life in it.

If you need colour, or something the weight of a light paperback, or something that will fit in a purse, or something as future proof as any Kindle can be, this isn't for you. The large screen is very very good though for the sorts of reading I do on it. No regrets so far, and hey, it's a lot cheaper than an iPad.

BTW it works fine in Australia.
