Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Altec Lansing inMotion iM7 Portable Audio System for iPod (White)Customer Review: Using it everywhere Summary: 4 Stars
I'm very happy with it. It puts my child to sleep at night, keeps parties going at the beach, and makes cleaning out the garage a whole lot more fun. Of course, I was just happy to get portable speakers for my iPod, but this model delivers more than I would have expected. The handle, integrated with and disguised by the cylindrical form, is very comfortable and offers a sure grip. The built in dock that locks my iPod into the machine means I don't need to worry about the iPod disconnecting, and I don't need to carry two separate pieces. I'm no audio guru, so I can't tell you whether the sound will blow you away, but it sounds great to me at all volume levels and it can go very loud.
The only complaints:
(1)I have to take off my iPod's hard cover to make it fit in the dock.
(2)The volume keys are not very responsive at first, and then the volume all of a sudden changes very fast, making it a chore to fine tune at lower levels (i.e. when putting child to sleep).
(3)It's size makes it a significant item to bring along -- "you carry the cooler, I'll carry the iM7 Portable Audio System and the soccer ball".
But if this is all I have to complain about, then I guess its a pretty good product. I haven't had experience with other models, but I'd recommend this one.

Customer Review: inMotion iM7 - Best on the Market -Hands Down Summary: 5 Stars
I shopped on the internet for hours before making what I found to be a very difficult decision to buy the Altec Lansing inMotion iM7. I have been a devout Bose fan for over 15 years, but found myself making the decision to try another brand than I was used too. The Bose Sound Dock failed to have the bass that most Bose products offer. I believe it results from the lack of the acustimass technology (aka subwoofer). Also the Bose lacked the volume that the iM7 offered. I looked hard at the Klipsch iGroove HG which would have been my second choice.
Strengths for the iM7 include, Bass - limitless and deep. The highs and mids are also clean and crisp. I have had no problems with the door. In fact I feel it protects the iPod better than most do. This unit will wake the dead without distortion if you really want to. Excellent volume range. The cost is another nice aside. It runs about $75 dollars less on many websites than both the Klipsh and Bose systems.
The only down side if you can call it that is its size. It is slightly larger than the other mentioned units, but for my office purposes it works excellently. My second choice would have been the iGroove if I had not trusted the reviews I read about the iM7.
Good luck and happy shopping.
Customer Review: No disapointments here Summary: 5 Stars
I got this for my girlfriend for christmas '06
so it's pretty new still. It's sound is wonderful. My roommate has a Bose Sounddock and the IM7 is, in my opinion, better. It definitely looks cooler and personally matches the iPod styling better. As with everyone of these things it isn't perfect:
-It is heavy- cannot even imagine it with batteries installed!
-No display, or other reference for volume (be careful using the Aux in, or you might rupture an ear drum)or the treble/bass values...
Of course it is fine because you use your ears to set sound levels
-it might be nice to have a sync port, but how often would you use it?
-the handle is a little awkward, but who cares?
-The only serious concern is over the mechanism that holds the cradle closed: I read some complaints and saw one at radio shack that didn't stay closed.
My final remark is in regards to the remote: stop complaining! Not even apple's own A/V kit (This is a great value compared to the components of the kit individually) for stereo connections allows you to browse the iPod's menu using the remote! (I would know, I have one)
In summary this is a great system and the only real concern is over the cradle latch, but I think altec lansing will keep the customer statisfied
Customer Review: Good price, great functionality, but lacks some treble clarity Summary: 4 Stars
Just got this, and decided on it over the Bose Sound-dock because of its versatility. Unlike the Bose, it has two video outs (both composite and s-video--so I can play my ipod on my tv), and more importantly an auxiliary in-port, so I can play other devices, such as my TV, which has satellite radio through DishNetwork, through the speakers. Likewise, I can hook it up to my computer, to another mp3 device, etc.
Unfortunately, the device does not have the same audio clarity as the Bose. At half the price (at least when I bought it), it's not a bad deal. Audio wise, what I miss most is the clarity in the treble. The bass and treble are "adjustable" via the remote control, yet at softer sound levels, the treble mellows, dulls out and is subsumed into the midranges. On some songs, I miss the high treble crispness that you'd hear on a good tweeter or even on the Bose. Lyrics and voices can get a little muddy, and don't quite seperate from the midrange sound as they could. The sound definitely improves if the unit is placed at ear level or above, as opposed to a lower table or surface.
At louder volumes, the clarity is better, but I live in an apartment, so am trying to stay on my neighbor's good side, so cranking it up isn't always an option.
Customer Review: DO NOT BUY ALTEC LANSING...CHEAP!!! Summary: 1 Stars
I don't know what happened to this. My Dad has not used it at all until recently. He has had the im7 a little over a year and now is home recuperating. He listens to music and audio books on it.
Yesterday he told me it simply would not turn on. I tried it, different outlets, tried working it with batteries, no good. I did get a spark when I plugged in the AC adaptor.
My assumption is the power amp blows in these things, much like the power amp in any cheap guitar or home stereo amp.
Now I have to call these idiots at altec? If anyone had any success with altec please leave a note here. I can use the help.
Thanks!
Update April 30th, 2009
Altec Lansing said the item was out of warranty and basically was no help. I asked where I could get it repaired since they do not repair the units in Pa. The young guy on the phone answered with "Um, I dont know. Take it to an electronics repair place." I took it to Radio Shack, they sent it to their central repair place in NJ for $20. It came back after a week and a half. Parts unavailable. I wont be writing any more about this item, just maybe disassembling it myself to see if I can fix it (right). I ADVISE ANYONE TO STAY AWAY FROM ALTEC LANSING PRODUCTS.
