Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Altec Lansing inMotion iM7 Portable Audio System for iPod (White)Customer Review: I am very happy with the im7 Summary: 5 Stars
I think these are great portable speakers.
As a reference point, I first bought the logic i station and returned it as I thought the sound was terrible. I then got the jbl on stage and im7 to compare the two. While I thought the JBL was much much better than the istation, I thought the im7 was even better. The JBL sounds a little tinny and doesn't get very loud. The IM7 can get fairly loud and to me sounds good. The extra money for the IM7 was worth it to me, but if you are trying to save money, I would say that the JBL is a good buy.
Other im7 pros: Unlike the Bose sounddock, you can control the bass and treble on the im7. Also, unlike the Bose or the JBL, you have a battery option on the im7. And of course, the sound is great--my family was also surprised how good the im7 sounded for a one piece system.
The one negative on the im7 is the remote. You have to be fairly close for it to work.
I can't do an accurate sound comparision between the Bose and the im7 as I only heard the Bose in the store, but given how good the im7 sounds, I think they are comparable. Even if the Bose is slightly better, it is definitely not $100 dollars better than the im7.
While I am very happy with the im7 for a portable system, if you do not need portable, I would recommend the klipsch ifi instead. I have that system as well and it is incredible.
Customer Review: KICK IT OUT Summary: 5 Stars
PARTY YER iPOD ! Sounds GREAT ! The massive battery consumption is great for the outback. By that I mean it takes a LOT of D cells not that it EATS them any faster than it needs. If you have ever played with any of those 2 AA or AAA "powered" speakers you will appreciate the difference. These speakers ROCK.
2 questions I will try to answer after extensive Playa torture testing is how well the batteries last and will it charge the iPod with the batteries or do you need AC ? OK the batteries last pretty well but they do not recharge your iPod, you need AC power for that.
One quibble is the remote is a bit lame, you need to fire it directly at the mothership to get it to work but it does have a stash spot on the unit that is handy to prevent loss and more than I can say for BOSE. O yeah and did I mention that this sound beats my Wave radio ?
Since I have written most of this my X GF inherited the iM7 unit [ I wanted her to go happy hula-ring into the sunset so didn't fight her for it.] I tried to replace it with a iM9 after a iM4 and thy both fell flat, more portable but the sound is definitely lacking. SO I GOT ME ANOTHER ONE and THAT is high praise indeed. In fact the ONLY iPod speaker system I have heard that MAY be better sounding is Apples iPod HI - Fi and thats 200 bucks more. ALSO for some reason the iM7 is now about a hundred bucks cheeper than from the Apple store on Amazon.
Customer Review: Good sound reproduction and looks Summary: 5 Stars
My wife and I bought this for our 15 year old daughter who has an Ipod and whose boom box had died. After looking at the options in the $90 - 150 range and reading the various reviews, I was going to buy the Bose Ipod player based on the Bose reputation and the fact I wanted my daughter to have something she would be satisfied with a few years and could take off to college in a couple more. I decided to read some of the reviews for the Bose and saw a few references to the Altec Lansing iM7. After reading many more reviews of both units (Bose and AL), I decided to purchase the AL iM7 not because it was cheaper, but because the majority opinion is that it has better sound. On Christmas day, my daughter had it up and running in about 15 minutes and we were all amazed at the bass this little unit can put out. The highs could be a little clearer, but overall, this is a great sounding unit and in her 12 x 12 bedroom more than fills the room with sound. This unit will definitely fill up larger spaces easily. It is also mobile and can be run with batteries.
Pros: great sound; cheaper than the Bose; will provide years of satisfaction.
Cons: remote is very small and could be lost easily though there is a nifty little holder it snaps into. You may want to add some external tweeters to improve the highs if using as your main music source in a living room.
Customer Review: iM7 Boom Box Summary: 4 Stars
Let's start with the size, it's relatively large similar in size to say a "Boom Box with CD, Cassette Player" but more stylish. So I was abit surprised when it arrived. I was hoping to use it on my desk for background music but it's too large for my desk. It merits its own shelf space.
The sound is definitely good, clean and open. Bass and treble can be adjusted independently via the remote. My only gripe there is you can't see the level of adjustments. There's no dials or graph, so you're tuning via your ears. If you're an audifile and own exceptional speakers you'll wish for abit more separation in the mid tones. I found myself comparing them to my audio system and frankly it's unfair.
I like the fact that it will operate via batteries as well as AC, allowing it to be used on the patio. But it's not a unit you're going to want to carry around for too long, with D cell this would be quite heavy.
The remote works fine and as someone mentioned earlier, the battery can be abit challenging to install but can be done.
It looks great and keeps the whole Apple "simplicity and clean ergonomics". I'm happy with the purchase, just wish it were abit smaller. If there were a step-up from this unit with more power and better speakers, I would step up to it...as long as it wasn't too outrageous ($$$).
Customer Review: Best Sounding iPod Audio System out there, but..... Summary: 4 Stars
Well, I can say that I did a lot of research and read many reviews before buying the Altec Lansing iM7. I was not dissappointed in the sound! Wow! Just plain awesome! Rivals many 2.1 systems! But...#1, there is not adaptor for the ipod Nano 3rd gen (aka - Fat Boy). But that is OK, you can still place it in and close the door. Second but...remote doesn't control iPod fucntions. No big deal. Forward song, last song, volumne, etc. Now, the biggest "Buts"...The system will blow the subwoofer or tweeter if played too loud for too long. It shouldn't, but it does. I know this after TWO units!! And the last "BUT"...Altec Lansing (AL) does not make these anymore. Has not since 2006. I called for repairs under the Amazon warranty, & this is how I found out. They will replace it, but their new stuff sounds aweful. Seriously, their sound quality on all their speakers/systems is just tanking!! Anyway, I was told by AL rep that they stopped making it as it was to exepnsive to make. WTF??? That is bull! They were always sold out of it!! Economics 101 people! So that was not a serious issue for them and likely a front "line" to tell the public. Anyway, I would love it if someone bought the patent and made it again, better longevity this time though. I hope this helps those other researchers out there. Great sound, just be careful!
