Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Altec Lansing inMotion iM7 Portable Audio System for iPod (White)Customer Review: Not bad, but a few flaws Summary: 4 Stars
Sound overall isn't bad at all. You can hear more of a surround sound effect when up close, but that diminishes the further away from the unit you get. Sound carries pretty well in open areas or large rooms. I can put it on a medium sound setting and still hear pretty well a couple rooms away.
The one thing I don't like is the limited features on the remote. There is a volume, bass, treble, play/pause and next/previous function. There is no visual level for the volume, bass and treble, so the only way to tell the level is by ear. And there are no arrows to scroll through music or bands, so if you want to hear a different song on the same album, you just have to "next" through all the songs, and you have to go over to the unit and use the controls on the ipod to switch albums or bands. This feature would have been nice on the remote.
One other thing I don't like is the fact that the black version of this dock is more expensive than the white version. This is just taking advantage of those of us who have the cooler looking black ipod.
The best feature of this dock is the S-Video out. This way, shows that you download can be watched on a regular TV, with pretty good quality. If you want the sound to come out of the TV, you have to purchase a cable where one end is a headphone connection and connect it to the headphone jack on the back of the dock. You can purchase headphone-to-RCA cables at any electronics store, or even here on Amazon most likely. Overall, 4 out of 5.
Customer Review: Great system in a Small Package Summary: 4 Stars
I just got my iM7 and I've been pretty impressed with it. It's got way better sound than any system I've found in the price range (the bass in particular is much more pronounced). I played it pretty loud and I haven't had any distortion (except Jay-Z's "Big Pimpin" track...but there's a lot of bass in that song). And don't worry about lack of volume because the iM7 gets plenty loud. You might want to turn the treble down a little when playing it loud though. The only reason this is getting 4 stars instead of 5 is because it caused my 30 GB video iPod to lock up when I was playing it at a high volume. I haven't heard of that being a problem with any other iPod models though.
Other than that, just the same minor complaints as everyone else: no way to know how high or low the bass/treble is because there's no indicator, the dock that you put your iPod in does seem a little cheap, and it takes 8 D-cell batteries to make this thing portable. It also doesn't charge your iPod when the system is running on batteries. Minor annoyances considering the sound quality.
So if you're looking for a system that needs to be occasionally portable and you want to be able to have enough clean sound to start a dance party, then this will be a great system for you. On a side note, if you need a more portable system that has a great sound to it, check out the iHome IH19. My girlfriend has one and it holds your iPod in it and it's water resistant. A little better suited for the beach or camping than the iM7.
Customer Review: Sweet sound, nice box, easy setup Summary: 5 Stars
After much thought, I sent for the iM7 (it was on sale!) even though I hadn't been able to get a test listen in any store. I have been not only relieved but very pleased when I finally listened! I'm not a high-end audiophile, but I do listen to classical and unplugged music as well as trance, rock, jazz, and blues. Bach and Miles Davis both sound sweet and full. The bass is plenty solid, and the highs are clear and not tinny. The sound is noise-free and big for a small box.
I schlepped the box to work on the subway, so it's not over-heavy. Set up took a whole 2 minutes. The directions are all in pictures and quite clear. There's also a user manual in a dozen languages, plugs for all sorts of foreign power supplies, cord for external sound source, and the remote. I have an iPod Photo, so I didn't need the cradle adjusters. Pause your iPod, poke it into the cradle, push the cradle closed gently (it has a soft push-to-open latch), plug in the back, and go.
If you have problems with getting the battery in the remote, lay it on a table surface and use a nail file to gently pry it open with one hand while pinching the bits on the edge with the other.
There are aux, headphone, composite, and s-video receptors on the back next to the power-in receptor, and compact hand-hold. The unit is sturdy and well-made, too.
Overall, I really love this sound-dock. I already can't live without my iPod, and this is a great investment for it.
Customer Review: Better Than The Bose! Summary: 5 Stars
We own the Bose player but wanted smaller or portable players for other locations in our home. We tried and returned two players (Coby CS - MP93 for $46.99 and another Altec Lansing in the $50.00 price range.) Both were very tinny and had no options to control the sound quality. We took a chance on this one and we are completely blown away! Our big concern, considering the price, was it as good as the Bose. Well, it is so much better that we are considering selling our Bose and buying another one of these models. The moment we played our first song our jaws dropped and we were immediately up and dancing cuz the sound just was so good you couldn't help but want to dance to it!
The base is robust and the high range sound it crisp and not tinny at all. The remote lets you control both of these qualities where the others, including the Bose, do not. It's a bit larger and heavier than all the others but given the fullness of sound and the capable volume you would expect it to be much larger, like an amp!! The remote is small and must be directed to the top of the player so if you're sitting anywhere below the top of the unit you may not hit the right spot to make it work. But this is so minor I wouldn't even label it a problem or drawback, but more a reflection of how lazy and comfortable we've all gotten at being able to control everything around us with out needing to even lift our arms higher! We highly recommend this product. Go for it and ENJOY!
Customer Review: Best sound for your buck Summary: 5 Stars
This machine is great. I originally bought the inMotion iM7 back when it was available at Best Buy and fell in love. After a year or so of hard love and a bad power outlet I needed to replace it. Best Buy no longer carries these great jam boxes. So I went through a Bose, JBL, and another type I wasn't familiar with. Was never happy with the replacements.
Amazon.com was a last resort. Thank goodness I found this guy again!
Here is the point;
*Great crisp sound when turned up loud.
*Low deep bass and an amazing treble
*Remote control
*If the bass is too much or there isn't enough treble, YOU can change the settings by remote
*Comes with a aux cable for plugging in anything that isn't iPod, listen to a laptop, a Walkman, a Zune, if it has a headphone jack you can plug it into the iM7
*Portable! With some D batteries you can take this bad boy to the beach and share you great taste in music with everyone.
*Tough. I've dropped the iM7 once or twice and besides a little ding and a dent in the screen, it still plays like new.
*Cheap. For the quality of sound and control you have with this box you can pay up toward $300+ for any other machine that doesn't even come close to this awesome sound.
*Travel. iM7 comes with a set of different plug attachments for different parts of Europe, Japan, the world.
You can't go wrong with the inMotion iM7. I promise.
