Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Altec Lansing inMotion iM600 Firewire-Charging Portable Audio System for iPod (Black)Customer Review: Excellent Portable speakers, if you can get a good price! Summary: 5 Stars
I'll start by saying that i received these speakers a couple days and so far really like them. I got an amazing deal on them off ebay for $22. For that price i'd rate these 6 stars. Easily a 5 star product if you can optain them for $60 or under. over that and i'd give them 4 stars. Or if i paid the godawful $180 that futureshop charges, i'd probably give them 3. (as i don't think they're worth that much at all)
That being said, for small speakers, they sound great! a little high in the treble, so i personally find the 'treble reduction eq' on the ipod to accomodate the sound of these speakers the best. Sure they're not SUPER bassy, but i listen to house music where you want a good bass, and for portable speakers of this size the bass is definitely adequate enough, so the song doesn't sound like tinny garbage as a result of a poor frequency curve on typical clock radio speakers. I'm very pleased with how loud these speakers can get, and minimal distortion at high levels (that could vary based on how any given track is mastered as well)
The speakers are a bit bigger at the back then i expected, so it will take up a little bit of room in a suitcase, but still not that bad and highly portable (plus if it was to thin, that would just degrade the sound quality further, so everything is a compromise.
Overall, these are great speakers, they fill a room when set in the mid 20's (goes up to 40) so impressive loudness. I love how it charges the ipod. And when not in use at the beach/vacation, makes a good bedroom radio.
if you can get these under $60 you'll love them. Under $100 and they're still good. More than that though and i don't think a speaker of this size is worth that price.
Customer Review: Review from an "ordinary" ipod user Summary: 5 Stars
I'm amazed at some of the technically sophisticated reviews on this product. I truly congratulate those with the knowledge, skills (and ears) to review on such a level. My review is geared to those looking for a quick and dirty review.
This device is awesome. It is quite portable. It plays loud without losing quality. It has an FM radio (I guess that's in case I run through all 6800 songs on my ipod). It has a video out jack, which I have used with great success. It's very easy to figure out how to use. It seems to hold a charge for a long time...although I've never tested it to see how long it takes to run out, I have used it for many hours without needing to charge. It also charges your ipod when plugged in, which is nice. It's pretty cool looking too. Not quite so bulky as some of the ipod speakers I've seen.
Have I mentioned that it's loud? For me, my first test with a product like this is to see if I can crank it pretty loud and not have it sound tinny or static-ey. I'm hugely impressed. That's where the money is, I think. Yes, you can buy a cheaper system...but try "turning it to 11."
Downsides: tiny little remote that would be really easy to lose. You'd still be able to use all the features...but you'd be bummed to lose the remote anyway. (Although I've managed to hang on to it so far!). Also, to use the charger, you have to unfold the system and stand it up. It takes up a little less space when the base is folded up, and it would be nice to be able to charge it in that position. But these are pretty minor quibbles indeed.
If you enjoy your ipod, and need to crank it up...this is a very nice system. I've really gotten my monies worth.
Customer Review: Great for iPod Touch 2nd Generation Summary: 4 Stars
We were looking for an attractive portable device with a decent quality speaker system. We tried this item and it's competition the Logitech Pure-Fi Anywhere 2. The Altec Lansing looks attractive in our home and doesn't take up much space compared to the longer Logitech. We had both systems in the same room and had others give their opinion by playing the same music on each without their knowing which device we were using. They picked the Altac Lansing each time. We all agreed this performed better all the way around. Some have commented they can't fit their iPod into the slot. We are not using any of the inserts supplied just place it on the slot without, no problem. You do have to watch as you insert it that it is over the prongs correctly. I have a plastic protective backing on my iPod and I do not have to remove it to get it to work. We like the fact that it also includes an FM radio as well. It's been great in the house, on our deck/patio and for travel. The newer version came out a couple weeks after we purchased this one. The added features look great but we like the looks of this better. It would be nice to have a remote that includes more and a handle but it costs more. The shiny plastic does show finger prints but I try to handle it carefully to avoid that. The remote is small but works. Wish it came with a case like the Logitech. For the price range and our use this is the best! It also charges your iPod when plugged in and can be used for an alarm, especially nice when away from home. If you want a Bose sound, then you need to move up in price. We have had this for several months and so far so good. We got a 2 year warranty and by that time newer products will be out.

Altec Lansing inMotion iM600 Firewire-Charging Portable Audio System for iPod (Black)]]
I use this device in our second home, a condo in Hawaii, where space is at a premium. It replaces a much larger stereo system in the guest bedroom. I like everything about it, sound, compact, rechargeable internal battery so I can take it to the beach to share music with friends. I use it for my sandisk mp3 players and even cd player and notebook computer(which has lousy speakers). The only thing missing is a subwoofer.
The best attribute, however, is customer service and that is why I rate 5 stars, and more if I could. Upon returning to our condo a month ago for the winter I couldn't find my power cord and gave Altec a call. I expected to buy a new one but they said they would send one. Not only did they send it immediately, they sent it by 2nd day air! I the past ten years I can only recall of one other instance of such exceptional and unexpected customer service. In most cases we have all gotten used to many minutes of waiting, finally being connected to a person who is difficult to understand and no help.
As an aside, I've had an Altec Lansing computer speaker system for over 10 years, model ACS45. I can't imagine a better computer speaker system. Sadly they are no longer made but may be available used at Amazon or ebay. It has compact desk top speakers and an incredible woofer. It also has an extra imput which can be used much like the device reviewed above. You do not have to have your computer on to use this extra input.
Altec has been the best name in speakers for over 50 years and I'm glad it has survived in it's recent reincarnation
Customer Review: Battery, please don't go out on me Summary: 4 Stars
Music is always a significant element in my life, and whatever the occasion, I usually have some playing nearby. For the price, this system appears to be the best deal around. From Beethoven to Meshuggah, the sound quality is fantastic, and plenty loud enough for a large room or the backyard, considering its modest size.
The speakers on my laptop are very week, and the auxiliary input feature lets me use the iM600 as computer speakers.
I used to use a compact Sony stereo and played my iPod through a cassette adapter, and had to mess around with extension cords or battery changing. This iM600 is a breeze, and I'm still delighting over having the ability to skip a song with the remote (which is very small - careful not to misplace it as I have recently done).
The rechargeable battery lasts a long time, not sure specifically, but around the 7-hour range AL claims. When not in use, the dock ledge and kickstand fold inside the unit and it's easy to pack up or store.
* <---I took away the 5th star because about two weeks after I'd been using it, the battery malfunctioned. I had charged it all night, and in the morning it only played for less than an hour before turning off. I could not turn it back on, and had to fiddle around with the charger (plugging it in and out)until the charge-indicator light finally came on again. I let it charge for about three or four hours and it worked fine, and has ever since. I read some other reviews with similar problems, so I worry it may get worse in the future - but otherwise, it's been well worth it.
