Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Altec Lansing inMotion iM600 Firewire-Charging Portable Audio System for iPod (Black)Customer Review: Perfect For Travel Summary: 5 Stars
We looked at every portable audio system out there for an upcoming trip to Hawaii and this product meets all of our requirements; it's small enough for travel, has decent sound quality, long battery life, and has a line-in input for hooking up non-iPod devices (yes there are some of us out there who don't own iPods).
Because of its shape it is easily packed in our luggage without taking up too much room. The sound quality is really good compared to some of the other devices we tested. Only the Bose system had better sound quality (duh) but the size and shape of the Bose doesn't work well for travel and it's too expensive at $400.00.
Regarding the bad reviews that complain about the telescoping antenna that comes out from the side of the unit, ignore them. Those people simply didn't pull the antenna out far enough so that it could hinge and rotate up and around. That is a non-issue for people who aren't stupid. Sorry for the slam people, but the problem is you, not the device.
Customer Review: I'm not sure yet... Summary: 3 Stars
I agree with others that the unit looks and sounds good. I'm on my second unit, the first had serious issues with the power button. Returned it and got a new unit, no questions asked.
The new unit has issues with the previous/next buttons that I also experienced with the first unit: You can't skip to previous song, only to the start of current. Skipping to next will skip in audible chunks. My iPod is 3rd generation.
Also, when I got the unit my wife dropped in the wrong adapter (it comes with adapters for different docking options). No obvious way to get it out again. A call to Altec customer support revealed a secret trick that apparently is not documented anywhere. Don't try to pry it open with a tool.
So, in conclusion I'm. The price/sound/look may warrant more than 3 stars.
BTW, Altec customer support has been impressive. Two calls so far, both times I got a human on the phone right away. Both times I got immediate results.
Customer Review: Dock trouble Summary: 3 Stars
I've had my inMotion for about 6 weeks. I love it except for one thing -- after a month, there was no sound when I tried to play my iPod. I figured it was something about the connection between the iPod and the dock. It turns out that the plug on the dock that fits into the iPod is slightly bent. I was mystified because I am a gentle user and don't even take my iPod in and out of the dock very much. In order to get it to play, I have to shim up the dock to change the angle of the entire dock or put a shim behind the iPod to change the angle it sits in the dock. I talked to Best Buy about this and was told that it is a routine problem for the inMotion and many other docking systems. They said they've even had the plug on the dock break completely off. They said Altec Lansing will send me a new one because there's a one-year warranty and they know it's a recurring problem. But I am probably going to return it and get something different since it appears likely it will happen again.
Customer Review: Add a powered sub, and you're cooking with plutonium! Summary: 5 Stars
I've had these speakers for about 8 months now. I only use the volume at around 20 (out of 40), and it is plenty loud. I added an old powered sub that I had, and this combination really rocks! You don't need the Altec-Lansing one, which seems nearly impossible to find. The dock speakers redirect bass out to the sub when it senses the 'sub out' plug engaged to free up wattage for the mids and highs. I use the speakers for my laptop, as well as the ipod, though really, since iTunes is on the laptop, there's no need for the ipod, except to charge it. One thing I will comment on, and this is something others have noted: sometimes the connection between ipod and dock is not so good (won't play/charge), so I just stick something small and soft (nerf dart?) to tilt the ipod a little forward, and then all is good. So I don't use this system for its portability very often, but for me, it works extremely well. Great highs, great lows, it's not Bose! I'm kidding, Bose is good, though overpriced.
Customer Review: NOT a clock radio (especially iPod Touch), no AM Tuner Summary: 2 Stars
This product's description is misleading. The unit does NOT double as an (acceptable) clock radio. Firstly, there is no clock. It uses the clock built into your iPod. Second, the unit has to be kept ON with its bright blue display in your bedroom in order for the alarm function to work. Third, the alarm function belongs to your IPOD, not the unit itself. If you have an iPod Touch, this is COMPLETELY unacceptable because the iPod Touch cannot play music for an alarm. Because the unit doesn't have alarm clock capabilities on its own, you also have to enable/disable the alarm on your iPod if you ever take it anywhere. On the iPod Nano 1G, this is about four or five clicks deep; not very easy to do.
I give it two stars because it sounds okay (not great, but decent) for its size, is portable (if you like that sort of thing) and battery powered.
Also there is NO AM Radio tuner, only FM, this isn't disclosed anywhere easily found. What do I do for Sports/News radio??
