Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Altec Lansing iMT620 inMotion Classic Portable iPod Dock with Rechargeable Battery and FM Tuner

Customer Review: Good system. Works with nano 3g No significant flaws. Good audio. Worth the money compared to similiar units in the price range
Summary: 4 Stars

This review is much shorter and most of what I say has been listed in my review of the Altec Lansing IM600.
First as I mentioned it works with the ipod nano 3g without even using the adapter flawlessly.
The sound quality is very similiar to the IM600. It's only weakness compared to it is that the sound quality is VERY slightly more scratchy/harsher sounding in the mid or high range than the IM600. It makes up for this in its main pro. It plays louder and does not distort significantly until at the absolutely max volume possible. One step below this is still louder than IM600 with less distortion. The bass is better. It produces louder bass which goes a little lower in pitch (5-10hz or around 1/3rd to 1/2 of an octave lower). It also produces this better at louder volumes and preserves the details of the mid-range and high range on the recording without losing them. The detail is slightly better than the Im600 though it feels slightly scratchy or harsh compared. I think it's because the mid-range might have been recessed slightly for some reason. For more details check out my IM600 review because everything good that the IM600 can do, this does in terms of sound. The volume is about 15-20% louder at least than the IM600.
I liked the IM600 so this is good.
I listened to "Dancing with myself" from the glee sound track and the opening was very clear and I could hear the guitar stringhs and the low mid-range of the piano keys hitting octaves with the swish swish of the treble percussion clearly at the same time at loud volume. When the drums came in, this level of detail did not break up.

Use ability. The kickstand is a lot less awkward than the Im600. Though it still means that it gets in the way of a straight path for the power and the aux input (requires manouvering). Having said that, it is easier to setup and dismantle and more importantly you don't have to take the ipod out to fold up the unit to make it portable. Now the Ipod won't be stable on it while you move, but you have the option to move it to a different table over short distance quickly which my wife needs a lot. So portability though perfect is bettter than the Im600.

Now, if portability is more important the logitech pure-fi anywhere 2 which I tried is MUCH better at it nearing perfection in terms of portability. However, the sound quality is singificantly poorer than either altec lansing systems mentioned here though it is still pleasant and listenable and does not distort at all though lacking bass detail. Also the logitech does not have enough volume to fill up medium to big rooms and sometimes can even be hard to hear.

The remote on the Imt620 is BETTER (yes, better coming from my wife who uses this remote extensively) than the IM600. However on heavy use the remote battery ran out in about two to three days !!!! It may not do this with a replacement battery. I haven't asked my wife. That's why Im not harping about it since that initial complaint, after replacing the battery, she hasn't compained which may mean that it was just the original battery being wonky and not the remote. Anyway I think is still quite poor in terms of battery amount. I mean her rechargeable battery on the IMT620 lasted longer than the remote. Im used to my remotes lasting months with the original battery. It does have a good range and without something in the way can be controlled by about 15-20 feet away. It also feels more like using an ipod and its layout is significantly more intuitive to use than the IM600. There is a space to put this remote in the IMT620 and it fits snug as long as you don't heave the unit across a football goal line (or upside down) and this space on the system is VERY convenient!

The best remote I've used is on the pure-fi anywhere 2 which was just great to use. This is an imitation of the pure-fi's remote unfortunately they missed a few details that made the pure-fi remote great. The pure-fi had nicer buttons, and pressed easier and was smaller.

The rechargeable battery lasts as long as it is rated and when brand new actually lasts a few hours longer. My wife has used this unit for about 6-8 hours of music at near max volume and the battery meter says it's halfway gone.

In overall features which include all these features taken into account especially these good qualities sound quality and detail, bass extension and quantity, ability to fill up a medium room at good loud levels, nice remote (with awful battery), speaker system battery life this is the system I would chose and hang onto. I am satisfied with this and I am picky.

I compared this to: Altec Lansing IM600 and Logitech Pure-fi anywhere 2 for a few days. I also compared it to the cambridge soundworks Megaworks 510D and more recently the axiom audio's M80ti v2 (These systems win in every respect regarding sound quality. No comparision, totally different class and price ranges, not a weak point against the IMT620). Have had this unit for less than a month.

If you are looking for portability above all and you don't need to have the volume very loud and listen at medium or background casual levels. The Logitech Pure-fi anywhere 2 should be your choice. It is lighter, easy to pack, can be carried using just the fingers of one hand, and packs your ipod, remote into the case without dissasembly or arranging.

If your looking for VERY VERY slightly better sound quality than the IMT620 at MEDIUM volumes (not loud volumes) then the IM600 may be for you but this is debatable as the IMT620 did some thing better even at medium volumes. I personally would skip the choice and choose the IMT620.

Description of Altec Lansing iMT620 inMotion Classic Portable iPod Dock with Rechargeable Battery and FM Tuner

The versatile inMotion Classic is designed for extreme portability, letting you take your music anywhere. Compact and lightweight, the inMotion Classic folds to the size of a small, flat book to pack away. The innovative handle is more than just a handle and serves three important roles , to swing up for grab-and-go transport, to swing back as a stand to securely kickback the speaker system, and to swing under in a "stowed" position. This stowed position electronically prohibits the system from turning ON and draining the on-board rechargeable Lithium-ion battery.
