Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Altec Lansing XM3120 Docking/Speaker System for Audiovox Express and Delphi Roady XTCustomer Review: Wow! Not too bad at all. Summary: 5 Stars
Wow! was my first thought when I hooked this little radio up. I have it set up about 10 feet from a SW facing window and the reception is fine and it sounds great. I didn't even have to unwind the sat. antenna cord and place the antenna by the window. It appears the terrestrial antenna is picking up a signal as well, so for those of you that don't have a terrestrial signal I suspect the sat. antenna placement will be sensitive and require line of site through a window. Read below for my definition of sounds great and in what context.
For the cost of this unit I am very happy and will buy a couple more to support my office and multiple rooms in my home.
I agree with a previous reviewer that the volume knob could stand to be a little larger, but otherwise my expectations have been exceeded for 45 dollars. I'm getting that feeling of satisfaction ...... you don't feel ripped off and the product is useful.
Sound Quality: Better frequency response than I expected for XM Radio - Non-CD Quality. There is a base port in the back that appears to be active with air movement while making noise. For the units size it gets into the lower frequencies pretty well. The highs are "crisp enough". Of course there is the compression effect you can hear as compared to CD quality audio, but that is just inherent to satellite radio and not a feature of the speakers. The speakers system's sound quality is in line with the audio quality of satellite radio. If you were to compare this to a nice set of home speakers hooked up to a clean amplifier playing a CD, you would certainly think this sounded inferior, but in context it's an awesome little box.
Volume: I would rate the volume the speaker system puts out as medium. If you are looking for a cranker, this is not your preferred device. If you are looking for a small foot print, decent quality sound, and low to moderate sound pressure levels, I suspect you will be very happy. I probabaly feel comfortable saying it's louder than medium, but it's not going to work for a teen-age party. Something to note is that at max volumn there is no distortion (unless you turn the base all the way up), so the volumn range that is available is useful even at the top end.
I can imagine this is superb for an office where you don't want lots of volume or a small room in which you will be sitting within 10-15 feet of the unit. If you want to fill your house with music, you may want to consider hooking the headphone output up to your home amplifier and juice it up. I hooked my Ultimate Ears SuperFi 3's in-ear earphones up to the headphone output and found the audio signal to noise ratio acceptable.
I find it odd that people would indicate the sounds quality is poor. I guess if you don't consider that it's a small desk top speaker set playing XM Radio then you could say it's not so great, but if you do consider what it is, then you will likely say not bad design guys/gals. If you are an audiophile, then you don't listen to XM for anything other than news anyway, but if you just want a decent frequency response in a small nicely designed package for sat. radio, I say buy it.
