Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Altec Lansing Music Speaker

Customer Review: Great quality but very difficult to use
Summary: 3 Stars

I recently owned these speakers and I will have to say that they provide excellent sound quality not to mention even after dropping it a few times it still played as well as the day I bought it. Also, the battery life is amazing. Three AAA rechargable batteries would last through about 3 work days. I did have a few issues with it:

1) The on/off switch is a pain. It requires twisting the silver ring around the metal cover over the speaker. Wasn't easy to do the first time and is impossible to do with sweaty hands or wearing gloves. It actually became easier after I dropped it.

2) The battery cover constantly gets loose and falls off. If you move them around a lot every once in a while you'll pick up your speakers and the battery cover remains on the surface, not on the speakers. Not a huge pain, btu if you carry it around in your backpack expect to look around for them.

3) Finally the thin cord eventually frayed which led to its disuse. Where the rubber cord casing meets the plug eventually tore apart from wrapping it around and twisting (again from moving the speakers around a lot) which caused the metal wires within the rubber cord to fray which then caused the speakers to stop working altogether.

In the end, I would still recommend these speakers to anybody who doesn't plan on moving their speakers around a lot. It might even be beneficial to just leave the speakers permanently on so you don't have to fool around with that twisting on and off switch, just make sure to have battery replacements nearby.

Customer Review: Fixed the on/off switch problem, speaker ok now.
Summary: 3 Stars

I just bought this at walmart the other day. They were all marked down to $10. The first time I tried turning it on, I figured out why.
I had the same problem as many others, I couldn't get the dial to turn to turn it on and off. I ended up taking the whole thing apart, pretty easy with a small philips and a smaller straight screw driver. I found out that you don't have to do that to fix it. All you need to do is use a very small straight screw driver to pry out the speaker grill(it's lightly glued in), then very gently pop off the outer, chrome ring. YOU DO NEED TO TAKE OFF THE SPEAKER GRILL FIRST. There is part of the chrome ring under it that will break off if you don't take the grill off first. I found glue around the base that the on/off ring was getting stuck on. I scraped off some of the glue. You'll find that the outer chrome ring has got 4 small pegs that ride in 4 slots. I think it's most important to get the glue out of these slots. I was ready to put a little grease in there as well but I didn't need it. I don't know how long this will last but as of right now, it's working good.
I got this just to listen to podcasts in my car. It's way cheaper than changing out my radio. If I was all about the music, I'm sure I'd look at it differently, but for what I listen to, this is good. I do see me getting an extension cable though, male on one end, female on the other. I would have given it 4 stars if I didn't have to fix it to make it work.

Customer Review: Fantastic portable speaker!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have had the iPhone for a cool half year now and it's been extremely frustrating that there are no speakers available that help block out the radio frequency used for the Edge network. This one does a fair job of it indeed. Prior to owning this little beauty, I constantly had to go into "Airplane" mode and turn off the radio for the phone and wi-fi. Yep, it sucked. What's the point of having the iPhone then right? I mean what about listening to streaming radio ? (Yes you can even do that on the iPhone).

Well, some speaker systems have come out for the iPhone now. To the tune of about $150 or more. No thanks man. Spending damn near half what the device costed is simply out of the question. So, I did my research and came across the iM207 by Altec Lansing. Sure there's still a little static popping and buzzing sometimes, but not nearly to the degree as it was earlier and definitely a lot quiter.

When they say, in other reviews, that this little speaker can fill a room with your music...they're not kidding. When I first got it, I used it in our master bathroom (about 200 sq feet with vaulted ceilings) and my wife came in wondering what I was listening too that sounded so clear and good.

This is an amazing little speaker and a must own for any iPhone owner out there looking to blast some of that sacred music kept on their black and silver beauty.

I cannot recommend it enough.

Customer Review: Perfect!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have just bought this speaker today, after reading reviews for about a year! I bought it for $12.95 at blank blank. In the past I have had 12 different types of portable speakers. Any thing from sony cube speakers, ihome, logitech, philips, and so on. I have been a bass player for 30 years and into audiophile equipment for as long. What I can say is that in high end speakers such as bose or yamaha or boston acoustics the cones themselves have the ability to move very fast. Bad speakers do not have this ability, that is why bad ones do not have the clarity needed to reproduce all the tones in music. This altec lancing im207 does. If I where to take this speakers and times it by ten in size then it would be on par with speakers costing hundreds of dollars. It is the most accurate sounds I have heard period. Very musical and alive and no need for two speakers because small units have no stereo separation anyway. The on off switch is easy, you cant put pressure on it, just go easy on it. Don't grip it like a jar. opening the battery compartment is easy. press on the rubber pads and push with your thumbs in the direction indicated. No on off light to save power. Altec lancing have bean making speaker for over 80 years. I have decided that this is my favorite portable and I think it funny just how smart the designers are, and afters years of loving music this comes along in such a simple and perfect way.

Customer Review: This speaker is just adequate
Summary: 1 Stars

I gave this speaker one star because, well, it works. The rest is all downhill from there. The biggest problem this speaker has -- and it has been mentioned many times here -- is the on/off switch. It is turned on and off by rotating the chrome bezel on top of the unit. Now, I regularly lift weights, but I struggle to turn this damn thing on and off. I sprayed a little WD-40 around the rim and that helped things just a little. But this is a very poor design. However, I heard that Altec Lansing has revised this switch. I wish I had gotten one of the newer units.

Secondly, the sound quality is pretty poor. The volume is certainly loud enough for personal listening, but the sound is flat -- there are no highs or lows. No treble, no bass. Fine for listening to talk radio or podcasts, but pretty poor for music.

Maybe this is because the speaker inside the unit is very small. Although the mesh screen over the speaker measures about 3 1/4 inches diameter, giving you the impression that that's the size of the speaker, the actual speaker inside is only about 1 1/2 inches in diameter. One of the reasons I got this speaker is because in pictures it appears that the speaker is quite large, but actually it is quite small. That doesn't explain the inability of it being able to reach high notes, however.

I wouldn't recommend that anyone buy this speaker.
