Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Altec Lansing Music SpeakerCustomer Review: Easy to use and take with you anywhere. Summary: 4 Stars
I'd read alot of reviews here stating the batteries were hard to install and the on/off switch is difficult. I purchased the speaker anyway because of the other positives listed about it. I was ready to wrestle with the thing to get the batteries in but found that I had NO problem installing them. It's possible I just lucked out, but I don't think you should let this put you off purchasing the speaker. Just push down on the back-plate and twist, it comes right out. Feels very solid. The switch is a bit tough to get on and off, I understand the other reviewers concerns on this, but it's not a deal-breaker at all. This little unit feels sturdy, the speaker cord wraps and secures easily around the base and it has good sound for a mono-speaker under $20. I'm very happy with my purchase. (Ps. I am still timing it to see how long the battieres will last...)
Customer Review: Great sound Summary: 4 Stars
The sound is great from this little amplified speaker. Altec Lansing did it right. When I travel, this is all I carry with my MP3 player. I love to set the speaker on the desk in the motel room and listen to the MP3 player. I used to lug around a little dual speaker unit, but the sound from this is so much better.
The gripes about the on-off switch are true. Being the handy person that I am, I immediately figured out how to pop the chromed ring off and shaved a little material off the bumps that make it hard to turn the ring. Now it's moderately hard to turn on and easy to turn off.
My next modification will be to wire in a small jack so I can power the speaker from a USB source or other power supply. At the same time I'll add a super-low power blinking LED to let me know that the power is on.
Customer Review: it's okay Summary: 4 Stars
This speaker is very easy to use, seems very durable and looks neat. I wish the cord was a little longer; it's only about 5 inches long. And I know this wasn't built to be a high volume speaker, but I'd like it to be a little louder. It's not loud enough to hear it well travelling in the car, or with other ambient noise too close. But for a quiet setting---at the desk or sitting alone, it's pretty good. For the volume it has, the sound quality is really very good. I like how it turns on and off by turning the speaker cover--no protruding switch to get in the way or be unsightly. I really like it for sharing my MP3 songs with friends. For good loud volume, stick to ear buds.
The buying process was seamless and perfect. Got the shipment in 4 days, I think, and in good condition. Nice buy overall. Great price.
Customer Review: Great for what it is Summary: 4 Stars
Sure, you can get speakers with better sound quality, or you can get cheaper speakers. However, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a speaker this size that produces a good sound quality and sufficient volume. It can play music nice and loud (not room-shakingly loud, but certainly loud enough to listen to around the house), and the sound quality is good.
A couple of things I'd like to see in future models of this product:
1. A longer, retractable cord. The current cord is only about 8 inches long. This is fine for an iPod, but I use it with my laptop as well, and it gets in the way.
2. A volume control on the speaker itself. Currently you can only control the volume using whatever device it's hooked up to.
Other than that, it's a great little speaker!
Customer Review: Mellow and full-throated with solvable mechanical issues Summary: 5 Stars
These small speakers deliver a rich, mellow sound, with surprising range, especially in the bass register. They seem vastly superior to the Philips SBA1500 system, which sounds tinny by comparison. Some users have commented that the Altec Lansing Music Speaker is hard to turn on; doing so requires twisting the outer metal rim. But if the rim jams, it, the front metal grill, and the rear plastic battery cover can all be removed and discarded, and a piece of masking tape pressed over the on-off switch at the front and bottom, to keep it depressed. I recommend using two of these speakers with a Radio Shack 3.5 millimeter splitter cable (two females, one male) in order to derive stereo sound from, say, a Sangean 220V pocket radio, which is digitally tuned and therefore is not subject to station drift.
