Customer Review: I should have heeded the negative reviews
Summary: 1 Stars

I read the reviews, both positive and negative and figured I'd take a chance - how hard could it be? It shouldn't be hard - it's clearly a simple process but I couldn't figure out any way my drive would match up with the PCB board and since there were barely any instructions (and from previous reviews it seems those instructions are misleading anyway)there wasn't going to be any help figuring this out.

I thought maybe it was my drive that is the problem -- and maybe it is, so I put in a request to the company's technical assistance. I figured I'd wait the required three days for a response and I have, and nothing's come back. I'd like to be able to use this enclosure because it will be a hassle to send back and get something else -- especially because no packing slip came with the product. Oh, and while I am at it, no firewire cable either.

Customer Review: Burn the instructions
Summary: 4 Stars

I ordered this for an external hdd I had, and it fell apart in the first step. I removed the screws, then the face-plate, which was supposed to be attached to the internals which connect to the hdd, came off....and left the internals stuck inside the enclosure. I tried getting them out, but they won't budge :(

Luckily, Amazon rocks and they're letting me exchange it, so hopefully I'll have better luck with the next one.
Got the new one, read the other reviews to learn the CORRECT way to install it, works great.

I'm using my old PS3 hdd in it as an external back-up drive for personal files (pictures, etc), copied everything over last night, didn't have any problems. It would be nice of there was a file sync/backup program that came with it, but a little searching on CNET and I found one that suits my needs.

Customer Review: Works great but a bit costly just because it has eSata
Summary: 4 Stars

Pros:
* Installing the hard drive was a breeze. Instructions were clear.
* Nice build quality and like the idea that the hard drive is screwed to the board.
* USB 2 and eSata interface.
* Got 95MB/s write speed when connected through eSata when transferring large files (over 4GB each).

Cons:
* Cost, Cost, Cost - just because it has eSata this enclosure costs three times a comparable USB only enclosure. Added to that, there is no eSata cable included, which costs an additional $5 (a 6ft cable).
* Since this is powered by USB connection, we need to have USB cable also connected while using eSata interface.

While connected through USB interface, throughput is nothing spectacular. Got about 11 - 12 MB/s write speeds. Get any $5 enclosure if you are planning to use the USB port mainly.

Customer Review: Assemble, Partition, Format, and Use Your AcomData Hard Drive on PC, MAC, and Linux
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought the red enclosure along with a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 640 GB hard drive and a red eSATA cable - all from Amazon. The hardware all fit together very easily. I recommend this combination for large capacity and high speed. The only problem is that there is no information on how to partition and format your new portable hard drive. This is not a unique problem to AcomData however, even the fully assembled and pricey LaCie drives fail to mention how to partition their drive system. Of course the problem gets even more complex to document when Mac, Windows 7, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Linux systems are used - perhaps all by one user and one portable hard drive.

I attempt to solve this problem with a short video I put together using LectureMaker's Bay Area video studio. Here is the link to the video: [...]

Customer Review: Just what I was looking for
Summary: 5 Stars

My HP Pavillion laptop smoked out on me and I was so worried about how to save my 200+ gb of files. I did some research and came across this device. After reading the reviews I purchased it. Installing the device was a bit difficult at first because the instructions were wrong and there was a piece of plastic covering the area the pcb goes on my HDD that I wasn't aware could be removed. Once I orvercame this, installing the HDD was very easy. As soon as I plugged the device into my mac, the computer recognized it instantly. As I am typing this review I am transferring my files over to my new laptop. And the transfer times are very quick also, although I don't know if this is affected by the enclosure. Anyways, this enclosure was worth every penny, and not only did it save my files, but I now have an external hard drive.
