Customer Review: Does what it says at a reasonable price

This is my first land line phone in about 10 years. I bought it principally because it is wired, has a multi-line caller ID display, a speakerphone feature and NO answering machine. Sadly, as with most things these days, it was made in China.
The phone doesn't require a separate power adapter, which is good for me since I move the phone between my living room and the bedroom frequently and have to plug it in to the different phone outlets. Having to move an A/C power adapter too would be a hassle. Since it is still a relatively new phone, I can't yet speak to the length of the battery life (4 AA batteries are required for all but the most basic features). As a consequence of not having mains power, the five-position tilting LCD display is not backlit, although it has four levels of contrast, so it's not always easy to read unless you're at an optimal angle.
Although I only use the phone on a tabletop, wall mounting looks like it would be very easy. It comes with a 6' line cord and a coiled handset cord that stretches to a maximum of about 8' (although pulling it longer than 4' will make the base unit fall off the table ;-) At some point in the near future I will have to acquire a longer coiled handset cord. The display language can be switched between English, Spanish and French.
The buttons are nice and big (1" wide x over 3/4" high), and the basic functions are intuitive enough. The three-line LCD shows an incoming caller's name and number as well as the date and time (AM/PM only, no 24-hour display option), although seeing `WIRELESS CALLER' or `UNKNOWN NAME' isn't very helpful. Disappointingly, it doesn't match names and numbers in the 25-number phone book to display familiar names of regular callers.
As well as a small LED to show that the phone is `In Use', there are also big bright LEDs for `Audio Assist' (which slightly boosts overall volume and certain sound frequencies to make it easier to understand the other caller), for `Mute' and for `Speakerphone'. The side of the unit has three separate volume slider controls for controlling the ringer, the handset and the speakerphone volume. There is a symbol on the LCD screen to indicate an incoming call (if you happen to have turned the ringer off), but you can't see it unless you're standing right next to the phone. A flashing LED would have been more useful. There is no indicator at all for voicemail messages.
The sound quality is good. People tell me that I sound OK when I'm on the speakerphone, and I can hear them perfectly well.
So, to sum up the pros and cons, for the low price it does what it says on the tin without many extra frills. The phone book could be more intelligent and have a larger capacity so as to display better caller ID information. AT&T could have packed a longer length line cord and coiled handset cord in the box, and a bright flashing ringer light would have been a nice touch. Otherwise, it's really not bad value for money.
