The apricom is a great tool for the system builder and/or troubleshooter. It provides the ability to quickly and easily connect the vast majority of hard drives to your computer via USB 2.
It comes with drive cloning software that usually works very well, but does not handle the situation of a single bad sector that was not in a file. I was not able to find a way around this limitation with the product. This took it from 5 to 4 stars for me as I am sometimes trying to recover data from "failed" drives.
The user interface for the disk cloning software may not be fully intuitive in the more advanced mode (manual partition layout), but once figured out it works just fine.

If you are careful in setting up this device (making sure all connections are sound, etc.) it will do what it is intended to do quite well. It is fragile, however, and rough handling will end its usefulness quite quickly and easily. The manufacturers missed an added feature for the device, however. Because of its small size, one cannot connect it to an ATAPI device (ROM drive, DVD drive)because the data connector and the power connector are too close together. A workaround can be affected with a short ribbon cable and a gender changer but it would be an added feature for the manufacturer to simply make the device a half inch larger and separate the connector inputs by that much!Customer Review: Universal DriveWire is a very handy toolbox item

This is very cool. I frequently need access to hard drives that for whatever reason need to be removed from a computer. Usually, the computer has died and data needs to be retrieved from the hard drive.
This universal DriveWire allows nearly any hard drive to be plugged into a USB port.
Features:
- It's Small - it'll easily fit in a briefcase or toolbox.
- It has a power supply to power-up the hard drive.
- No software required - it's as easy to use as a flash drive or thumb drive. It comes with a CD but I didn't really need it.
- Flexible - can support almost any drive: 2.5" laptop drives, IDE drives or SATA drives.

My old laptop drive was at the brink of overflowing and I was considering either buying a new computer or painfully trying to upgrade and backing up, etc. I was introduced to the Apricorn Drivewire by a salesperson at a local electronics store. I bought it and tried it out with my new hard drive. After following the instructions for the initial procedure, after a few clicks, it told me how long it would take... I went off for dinner and an hour and 45 minutes later, it was done! I installed the new disk into my laptop and it booted up just like the old disk. Phew!! ...to a 100% larger Seagate drive, booting-up without a problem and preserving all ThinkVantage hardware and software features, including the "Blue Button" and Service partition. "EZ Gig III" software worked reliably, cloning in about six hours the OEM Seagate drive to a larger retail Seagate drive, which required a Lenovo-specific firmware upgrade before starting the cloning. Read and follow the on-line and included instructions for this product but be sure you also follow Apricorn's special on-line instructions for Lenovo ThinkPads. No other "tricks" needed, except for a little research on the Lenovo, Apricon, and Seagate websites. Very pleased with the results.
