Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apricorn Drivewire Universal HDD Adapter USB To 2.5IN & 3.5IN Sata & PataCustomer Review: Excellent Product Summary: 5 Stars
This product allowed me to copy all of the files from FIVE old hard drives onto my new 500 GB hard drive.
One drawback: It was easy to use if all you wanted was to copy files, but it would not allow me to ghost my old laptop's Windows 7 drive onto the new drive. I suspect it was a permissions problem of some sort that caused the problem. I had to do a new install of Windows 7 on the new drive, but that is okay.
I'm so pleased with how easily I recovered all those old files...from Windows 98, Windows XP, and Windows 7 drives with different types of connectors, that I can't sing too many praises! I'm very happy to have all the photos and videos again that I thought I had lost forever AND I have all my old programs that I love too!!!
Highly recommend this product. Just read the warnings and be sure to plug everything in correctly. Works like a charm!
Customer Review: A "must have" for every propellerhead's tech toolbox Summary: 5 Stars
Apricorn Drivewire Universal HDD Adapter USB To 2.5IN & 3.5IN Sata & Pata
I purchased this device so that I could transfer data from a friend's dying 2.5 in SATA internal laptop hard drive to an external drive. Attaching the internal drive to the SATA connector port on the Drivewire was a snap.
From there it was simply using Windows Explorer to open the contents of the dying drive and a single "drag and drop" procedure to move the drive contents onto the external drive for data transfer
This is a "must have" for anybody, not just us propeller heads since a hard drive can die on you without notice at any given moment. I would also recommend this over the enclosure based Apricorn unit too as this allows greater flexibility.
Customer Review: Slick, handy dependable device. Summary: 5 Stars
I have not used this yet, but I work with several guys that have used it hundreds of times, mostly for notebook computer drives. So ... when I needed a mechanism for accessing drives outside of PC's, I went to them to see what works.
They are the PC support team for my work area. People come to them with broken laptops, etc, and a lot of blue-screen situations. They use this little device all the time for rescuing data, and even entire drive images.
Editing: Strike the 'entered earlier statement below. I was wrong. All power adapters are included, so this can interface to legacy IDE devices with no extra equipment needed.
(Entered earlier, but found to be inaccurate: "The only thing this device does not do is provide a power feed to (legacy) IDE devices. I got a power adapter on eBay for that, and I'm all set.")
Customer Review: Does the job. Summary: 4 Stars
This unit is very handy if you have external hard drives that you want to grab some files off of or do a backup etc. There seems to be some confusion about what to do with the power cable that comes with the unit. If you are using a SATA drive you plug the power cable into the adapter. If you are using a PATA drive you plug the power cable into the drive itself. I'll leave the USB connector for the uninformed to figure out.
I don't use the supplied software since I have a Paragon product that does much more. The HD connected to the adapter is recognized by all my software etc.
I have since found a similar unit with no software, no cables, no power supply, no case but MUCH cheaper overseas. I don't plan on ordering it but they are available. The Apricorn unit looks to be of much better construction than the cheaper unit.
Customer Review: No-brainer of a device. Summary: 4 Stars
This is a must have for any IT Technician.
Originally, I had thought I got a bum device when I attempted to recover data from a desktop that I thought had a faulty Motherboard. I plugged the drive wire into the IDE HDD and nothing happened. I had thought to myself, "I've never had a problem using other data recovery devices before... WTF??" But, as it turned out, it wasn't the Drive Wire that had the problem. More like a dead HDD problem. I tested the same Drive Wire with another hard drive that I KNEW worked and as soon as I plugged the uninstalled hard drive into the Drive Wire, the drive fired up. So that's more of what I expect out of a simple device like the Drive Wire. The brilliance, to me, lies in how EASY they are to use.
This IT tool is like a hammer is to a carpenter. Easy to use, but OH SO NECESSARY!
