Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of APC Essential SurgeArrest, 7 outletCustomer Review: Poor customer service, have to pay to have warranty validated Summary: 1 Stars
I own a APC surge protector that looks just like this one. I had a power outage and when it came back a few things were fried like my garage door opener and the USB ports on my computers motherboard. The APC surge protector is hooked up to my computer. My computer on a wireless network, so the only cables coming into it run through the APC surge protector first. I contacted customer service regarding my fried USB ports and they emphasized it must be a software issue. I spent 3 hours looking for a software fix and then finally concluded that was not the problem. To remedy the situation, APC said I would first have to send in my surge protector, pay the cost of shipping, and then they would tell me whether it had failed. I expect that the power surge that got through was low enough that it only fried my USB ports and would not show up in the testing of their surge protector, so decided it is not even worth paying to send it in so that they can tell me that there was no surge of power. The customer service agent was not customer friendly, nor did me much service. I would not buy this product again based on this experience - it is not worth the hassle.

The rating equates to the amount of excess voltage that reaches connected equipment. The lower the number, the better the performance of the Surge Protector is. Underwriter's Laboratory's UL1449 surge protection safety standard uses these ratings to help users gauge performance.
