All computer devices should be protected from both over-voltage and under-voltage. The former can destroy the hardware and the latter can destroy a day's work. The piece of mind is well worth it.
The APC ES 500 works as advertised though it did emit that funny "electrical smell" in its first few days of service.

Best battery backup I've purchased for my home office. Allows a couple minutes to save work and shut down PC after power has gone out. This unit broke - just stopped working within a year but it was under warranty and APC replaced it free, no hassles or cost to me.

Wish the unit had a separate online/offline light. When power to the unit is missing, the single red light turns off only when the warning sounds. The warning sound is like a lot of sounds you hear in the house so it isn't always easy to tell what is happening.Customer Review: USING IT FOR 4 YEARS

I was browsing through my old orders and I Was amazed this was here, I have been using it for 4 YEARS LOL. I never changed the battery either, and it still keeps the PC alive! This item is listed at over eight hundred dollars more than what it should be . Looks like a real desperate take-on by someone.
My exact model cost about $60 about 3 years ago, and still works fine.
