Customer Review: Needed a new battery a year or so later and battery is same price as buying new one

It did its job for a bit over a year but then the battery died and needs to be replaced. The replacement battery is $40 plus shipping so you are better off just buying a new one.
Only three out of the six plugs are actually back up supported plugs and the other three are only surge protected no battery back up at all. so if you need more than three you need a larger more expensive unit.
The software is easy to use and connects to the pc via usb connection.

This product became extremely frustrating to own the minute I needed it - a power failure. I was in the middle of heavy design work and it beeped for about 30 seconds before it died and didn't even help the PC hibernate. This has happened since for 2 years. Now I am here shopping for a new one, NOT MADE BY APC. I need to replace this one and I realized what I waste this was. It's a glorified surge protected, and should NOT be used for anything serious. I ordered 3 APC Back-UPS ES 500s on the recommendation of an employee of mine who used to work at APC. I've had them for about a month now without any problems. They've functioned properly through a few unexpected power interruptions. I'll gladly order more if the need arises.

- Large plug spacing, good for power adapters
- Simple design
- Long cord

- No line conditioning (usually an expensive option)

We bought this to backup the iMac G5 that I got my wife for Christmas. I have had an APC since 1996 and have depended on it to keep my systems running smoothly with the typical voltage fluctuations that we have in our area.
The overall product is very well designed and is a good value for the money.
I'm not sure if the Powerchute software was updated to run on Mac Tiger, howvever, so I did not install it.

This unit worked fine while it lasted, but the battery quit holding its charge after sixteen months. The power has only gone off 4-5 times in that span, and only once did it shut down (in the other instances, the power was back on in just a few moments or minutes).
Like other commenters have said, a new battery is about the same as a new unit. I'm going to shop around for a better-reviewed brand.
