I already knew how good this product was before we bought it. We had purchased one for my daughter and when lightening stuck it took out the surge protector and saved the computer. I have recently learned I might have been able to have that replaced if I had thought to follow up. But I was just so thrilled to have only lost an $80.00 (at that time) product and not a $1,200 computer. When ordering mine, the price had come down quite a bit since we had first purchased one, I got free shipping, I never even had to leave the house! I replaced an older APC uninterruptible power supply with this one. I like the power bar design which makes it easy to use. It includes software to shut down your computer if the backup power gets low, and software so that you can choose not to get an alarm if the power goes out in the middle of the night. It has enough backup power to give my tower and monitor over 20 minutes of power if the wall power goes out. One tip; if you have a spare backup outlet, plug your electronic phone in. That way you won't be disconnected if there's a momentary power outage.Customer Review: APC ES 500

I have the unit connected to a Mac.
My only disappointment with this product, is the switch does not disable all the outlets. When you power off the main switch, only the battery backup outlets are disconnected.
The surge protected outlets remain powered when the main switch is turned off.
Other than the switch, I am very happy with this unit. I have some experience with APC battery products. All my servers at work are protected with much bigger units, but this will work fine for my home computer.

I purchased this unit due to frequent blackouts in my area and 2 power supplies going bad. It will run my cable modem, router, PC, and LCD monitor for 5 minutes. This is more than enough time to save work and shut down. Equally important, I know that my electronics are receiving clean power.
I feel that this investment is minor compared to the loss of valuable data or the failure of equipment due to a power spike or an irregular power supply.

I have had this UPS for about a year and a half now and LOVE it!!! I just upgraded to the BACK-UPS 1000 (review to follow in about a month or two) and am now using this to backup my DVR, DVD recorder, and television. I could not be happier with this product! APC has some great stuff and I have had several different brands of UPS's. This one, the BACK-UPS 500, is probably their most popular. It's powerful, affordable, and VERY reliable!!! Give it a try -- You WILL NOT be dissappointed.
