Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of APC BE750G Power Saving Battery Back-UPSCustomer Review: Know Your Consumption & Check APC Website Before Buying Summary: 3 Stars
In desperate need of replacing a failed Cyberpower UPS that was only 2 years old, I picked this one up from a local electronics store. The package labeling suggests that this unit will last upwards of 8 minutes with their largest advertised draw (a 19" CRT and a Tower PC). Owning a 20" LCD along with my Tower, I figured I would fall safely within this advertised threshold.
During the installation, I liked the smart design of the product: spacing between outlets varied so you had room for both standard plugs, as well as the large "boxy" plugs that often power peripherals (one of those "why didn't they think of this earlier" design decisions I really liked). The software was also intuitive and really informative.
I first started to suspect a problem when the UPS would emit an ear-piercing tone while in the middle of gaming on my PC. I later diagnosed this as a warning that I was drawing more power than the UPS could handle! I moved the monitor off of the battery and the tone finally stopped. Starting a few days later, with the PC simply idling on the Windows desktop I would receive frequent pop-up warnings that there was less than 3 minutes remaining on the battery (which was advertised as a minimum of 8 minutes and a maximum of 70 minutes).
Using the provided APC software, I determined that I was drawing around 200W with the system simply idling. I called APC support and told them about how the packaging advertised a minimum of 8 minutes, but I was getting a warning that I had less than 3 minutes drawing only 200W (out of a maximum capacity of 450W). The tech informed me me that the the 3 minutes was an accurate remaining time with a 200W draw and that it was working as intended.
To restate the obvious, I was drawing less than HALF of the maximum capacity of the unit, but I was still getting less than HALF of the minimum advertised battery life and this is working as intended. This meant, if I kept the device, I would also have to live with constant warnings that I had low battery life if I kept the UPS connected to my computer.
Unwilling to live with constant pop-up warnings and sirens, and the unit being unable to perform the basic function of keeping both my monitor and computer on for a few minutes to get everything shut down properly, I have returned this product.
BUYER WARNING: Make sure you find out how much power your computer draws and check it against the graphs on APC's website BEFORE purchasing any of their UPS units. APC's advertised estimates are so beyond optimistic that I'm tempted to file a complaint for false advertising. The overly optimistic advertised estimates make an on-the-spot informed decision impossible, even for a tech-savvy guy like me. Hence the -2 star docking.
