Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of APC BE550G Back-UPS ES 8 Outlet 550VA 120VCustomer Review: Reliable UPS For Home and Office! - Recommended! Summary: 5 Stars
We have 5 "APC Back-UPS ES 8 Outlet 550VA 120V" units (2 at home and 3 in our shop) because our area is afflicted with "brown outs" and surges all year 'round. Our power is so bad that we have gone through 2 PCs, 3 printers, 3 microwaves, 1 oven, and several digital clocks over the past 5 years.
Prior to getting these APC UPS units, we only had one UPS by a different company and that blew out within a year of moving in (taking a PC with it).
The unit has 8 outlets (4 UPS and 4 surge protected), including 2 larger spaced "transformer" outlets.
We really like the APC units and have much better peace of mind when the power flickers and our PCs stay on.
Highly recommended!
Customer Review: Does what it is meant to Summary: 5 Stars
Installation was a breeze - just connected it to my Windows 7 PC and it recognized it right away. Didn't even have to install the software that came with it. Just tweaked the built-in power management settings in Windows to make the PC hibernate in case of power loss. I wanted to buy something that has just enough power to shut my machine down cleanly in case of a power failure - the selection wizard on the APC website was great and based on my configuration, it suggested this unit which gives the PC about 6 minutes to shut down cleanly. I connected it, turned everything on, configured my power management settings and then pulled the power plug off the wall - sure enough, within 2 minutes everything was cleanly shut down.
Customer Review: Works seamlessly with XP Summary: 5 Stars
The APC website states this unit will supply power for approximately 13 minutes at 50% draw and approximately 3 minutes at 100%. I plugged it in via the supplied USB and Windows immediately recognized the UPS. It was configurable in the control panel power options - the Powerchute software was not even necessary. I installed it anyway, however, since I was used to using it in business settings (this one is for my home). The software automatically disables the Windows controls and installs a very easy to use application with more options than windows. All in all, a great little UPS. I got this one after returning a Cyberpower unit which was a piece of junk (I fell for the cheaper price but you get what you pay for!)
Customer Review: APC Back-up power supply, model ES-8 Summary: 4 Stars
So far so good with this product. It was a snap to set up for use. I like the feature that lights when the battery needs replacement. It has the right number of outlets for my needs, although others with more peripherals might prefer a model with more. The APC brand came highly recommended to me by an IT professional friend, based on his experience with their service quality, but I have had no problems yet to test that assessment. The only complaint I can make is that the spacing between six of the eight outlets (3 on each side) is so tight that only standard plugs can fit side-by-side. If the plug-in is a larger box style, it hides the adjacent outlets. Not a problem if you just have standard plugs!
Customer Review: Great / Long Battery Backup Summary: 5 Stars
I would highly recommend this item if you have a desktop and need a battery backup. This is a big improvement over my last battery backup. I tend to have many large programs open that require time to shut down. This battery backup has a lot of battery time - which we need as we lose power often in my house. If power is out or flickering for a few minutes, I can keep working. If it is going to stay off I have quite a long time - 10-15 min of battery time with all the items i have plugged into the backup - to shut everything down. I would definitely buy again. This item also works well as a surge protector. I will be working and it will flash to battery backup and back to regular electricity.
