Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of APC BE550G Back-UPS ES 8 Outlet 550VA 120VCustomer Review: A Nearly Perfect Backup UPS for Home Use Summary: 4 Stars
I wanted a UPS back-up power system that would enable me to operate my PC (tower unit), 19 in monitor, all-in-one printer/fax/copier/scanner and router for a nominal 15 minutes following complete loss of power. The APS E8 meets the requirement for back-up outlets and back-up duration. The unit is relatively compact as the backed-up outlets are stacked over the 4 surge protected only outlets. The outlet functions are clearly marked. My only complaint is that the outlets should have been placed a little further apart to accomodate older equipment that uses plug mounted external transformers. Only 1 back-up & 1 surge protection only outlet are spaced sufficiently away from the others to accomodate such transformers. Otherwise, a transformer or similar oversized device with a plug will cover two outlets, reducing the utility of the box if those outlets are needed.
Customer Review: iMAC users, do not buy Summary: 1 Stars
Do not purchase this product if you are a MAC user. APC has software current for MAC only to 10.4. As I write this on 9/30/10, current MAC OS is 10.6.4. As such the APC UPS Backup will not communicate with a MAC to effect Automatic shutdown when a power failure occurs. Hence, one of the essential elements to prevent damage by unintended power interruption is negated due to APC's failure to maintain currency of their software with OEMs, in this case Apple. Many frustrating exchanges with APC yielded zip results as they continually tried to side step but eventually admitted the fundamental issue of their software being archaically out of date. So purchasing this battery in a plastic box was a supreme waste of time and $$$ as the heart of its operation is neutered by APCs dereliction to maintain current operating software. It is being returned.
Customer Review: It works.. what else to say? Summary: 5 Stars
Got it after the n-th power discontinuity in my house.
Once in a while I get an outage of less than a second. Very annoying. Sometimes is so short the computer keep working (internal capacitors are enough), but sometimes my machine reboot right in the middle of my work.
So, two choices:
1) complain with the electric company.
2) buy a UPS unit and don't think anymore.
After trying #1, I decided for the UPS. Since I don't need it to keep my server running for long time, and/or have automatic shutdown feature, I only needed a small one (probably a power surge and power rectifier unit would have worked as well)... this is cheaper, and does the job.
Since I got it I noticed a couple of times a power issue again, the UPS worked like a charm, kicked in, and my computer had no problem at all.
Customer Review: Happiness is a good UPS Summary: 5 Stars
Recently we purchased a new APC ES 8 outlet 550VA back-up UPS for our home office computer. This is the second similar sized APC unit we have purchased. The first has provided over 4 years of flawless service to us here in North Carolina where storm power outages and surges are frequent. While neighbors complain of damage to their electronic equipment, we have had no problems, no damage and no lost data. Just the reasons you need a UPS. The only "disappointment" in the whole process was that buying a new (and updated) unit from Amazon was the same price as purchasing just a replacement battery from APC. So we are using the old one as just a heavy duty surge protector elsewhere in the house. Highly recommend this product. Software installs easily and has worked without error in our Windows XP system.
Customer Review: Great product! Summary: 5 Stars
I ordered this for my new computer, and we had a power flicker just a few hours after I set it up! It worked perfectly. There is software included that will let you check the status of the battery and tell the unit what to do if it loses power (such as turn off the computer). Very useful!
Two things to note:
1) Make sure you connect the battery! There's a note on it to do this, but just in case you get in an unwrapping frenzy, you have to turn it over and slide the cover off in order to do that.
2) Only 4 of the outlets are powered by the battery- the other 4 are JUST surge protection. So if you want more than 4 items plugged into the battery, you may want to upgrade to a different model! It works perfectly for me though!
