Customer Review: Problem solved
Summary: 5 Stars

One of our two Panasonic DVR's (DMR-E85H) would routinely "freeze" and not reinitialize whenever AC power was restored following a utility power "glitch" or outage. In most cases, the problem could be resolved by unplugging the unit from the AC power for a period of eight to ten hours, at which time it would then resume normal operation. There were times, however, that it required more extensive and "intrusive" interventions to "bring it back to life". Although not specifically intended for use on home entertainment systems, the APC 120VAC, 330W, 8 outlet UPS/surge protector works great in this application and has completely eliminated the previously recurring problem. I now have not only the troublesome DVR plugged into the UPS but the second DVR and several other components as well. This eliminates the need to reset the date and time on components which do not have their own battery backed up memory each time that there is a power "glitch". APC's technical sales support was very responsive and helpful in answering my questions prior to purchasing their UPS. I highly recommend this product.

Customer Review: Flawed power button design
Summary: 1 Stars

I purchased this product recently. I love its features, except one design problem with its power button. The power button is located in a prominent location with a green LED on it. It can be easily depressed and it feels like it is not harmful to press it. WRONG!!! Pressing this button turns off the power for all connected devices IMMEDIATELY. You don't even need to hold the button for some seconds. Since there are many power outlets available with this product, it is likely that a user would plug and unplug power cables from varying devices from time to time. The power button can be depressed accidentally and cause a power outage to all connected devices that this UPS product is designed to protect. This can mean data loss when a desktop computer or a network attached storage device is connected to it. It's amazing that a highly rated UPS product would have this kind of a design flaw. I am going to return this product unless someone advise me of a reasonable remedy. Drilling a hole on the UPS to remove the power button is not reasonable, although I have been thinking about doing that.

Customer Review: Not Just for Computers
Summary: 5 Stars

I got one of these for my computer and my printer / fax / copier / scanner. I also plugged in my satellite box and a small clock (to avoid the flashing 12:00). The other night the power went out for 2 and 1/2 hours. I didn't want to miss the end of the baseball game (Go Phillies!) so I unplugged the computer and plugged in my TV until the end of the game. I didn't know how long the battery would last so I unplugged the TV and plugged in a lamp with a energy efficient bulb and a small fan - that I used part of the time because it was stuffy in the house. After the first hour several neighbors came over and asked me how I had power and I happily showed them the UPS. One neighbor admitted calling the utility company to complain that I had power and she didn't.

The UPS ran for the entire outage. I had never expected it to run that long and I am very happy with it. I am glad that I didn't miss the rest of the game and glad I didn't have to spend the entire evening sitting in the dark.

Customer Review: An Essential Computer Peripheral
Summary: 5 Stars

For years, friends knowledgeable about computers had advised me to get a battery backup, but having weathered several power outages with little consequence, I thought it an unnecessary expense. Then came the outage that virtually destroyed my machine and its functionality. With the advice of a technician whom I trusted and others whose advice has been sound, I purchased the APC Back-UPS ES 8. Now I am weathering additional outages as almost non events. Following the instructions and setting up the system was quite simple. The instructions and precautions were precise and complete. To date, the unit has worked exactly like it should. I first thought that I might need more output for my computer, but its power has been more than adequate. I highly recommend the APC brand, for based upon my experience, it has established a well-deserved reputation. By the way, the price of this unit was far less than the expense to have my computer put back into proper operation.

Customer Review: Quality unit, excellent software.
Summary: 4 Stars

This is my first ever UPS unit and it was a very easy set-up. The instructions were clear and I was especially surprised by the inclusion of software for this item. The UPS unit connects to your PC via an included USB cable and the software, which by the way has proven to be smooth running and bug-free, will keep track of the status of the unit. The unit is rugged and well-built, a quality item.

I have had quite a few brown-outs since purchase and the unit worked flawlessly, allowing the PC to stay operational instead of suddenly rebooting, losing all data. My PC has a flaw where I lose some BIOS settings during these brown-outs and this unit has thankfully eliminated that headache for me! I have yet to experience a black-out with the unit but the software shows I have an 8 minute window to shut down which is more than enough.

I would highly reccommend this unit to anyone looking for a nice size (power wise) UPS unit to protect your PC.
