Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of APC BE350R 350VA Back UPSCustomer Review: Seems like it's doing what it's supposed to... Summary: 5 Stars
So I have Verizon FiOS, which means if my router goes out, then my phone is dead, and my internet is dead, and possibly also my TV. I thought I should have a backup supply. So I bought this thing just really to supply the router in the event of an outage.
Anyway, I let it charge around 24 hours, plugged my router in, and simulated a catastrophic failure by shutting off the house power. I was on the laptop, connected to internet, with absolutely no problem for 25 minutes, and I am sure MUCH MUCH longer if I would have continued the test. But I thought 25 minutes was surely enough to convince the product was what I wanted.
So I recommend it. Note: When you get this item new, it is actually YOUR responsibility to connect the battery terminals before you plug it in. This can be a little harder than it looks. Just for the record.
By the way: I haven't even installed the software. If I read the reviews correct, it stinks anyway, and you don't really need it if you're going to use it as a light backup for like a cordless phone or a router.
Customer Review: Works great - just hope you don't need a new USB cable! Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this small model to keep my cable modem, router and external network drive alive during occasional brief power losses while working at home (the PC is a laptop with its own battery). It works fine for that purpose, although I'd want a lot more power if I had to run a desktop on it for more than a few minutes. There are two problems with it, though. One, if the alarm is enabled, there's no way to turn it off during a power outage except with software installed on a functioning computer hardwired via USB to the unit. Since my laptop is wireless, it's not connected to the UPS. I have it connected to my desktop unit, but that's not on the UPS - Catch-22. If we lose power at night, my choices are listen to the beeping; fire up the laptop, switch the USB cable and shut the alarm off via the software; shut the UPS off or put a pillow over it.
The other problem is the data input on the UPS is an RJ45 (ethernet) socket. If you ever need a new cable, it uses a special USB to RJ45 cable that costs almost as much as the unit itself ($25 - $35), which is ridiculous.
Customer Review: It's $40... It does what a $40 ups should. Summary: 4 Stars
We ended up buying almost 30 of these for our office and I got them set up last weekend. We decided to leave a couple computers unprotected because they aren't in the office much...
Anyhow. We lost power last night, and one of the systems that was left without one of these had its hard drive fail. It would not boot or let me re-install windows on it to repair the installation..> Luckily I was able to back up all of the files though and am currently restoring them to another ahrd drive to get the computer back up and running.
The time i'm spending on this computer today and then having to send its hard drive in for RMA is going to end up being close to double the cost of these units.
If you have higher wattage you're going to have to spend the extra money to get a more powerful unit but this will work great for single pcs or electronics.
** just s sub note. I placed my order for 28 of these and didn't expect them to even ship for another week... got them the next day for FREE!
Customer Review: False or Incomplete Specifications Summary: 1 Stars
This is more an indictment of the company behind this product than the specific product. It might work well in the right situations.
Please check with APC first before you buy any of their units and make sure that it will support the devices you wish to plug into it. I powered my 350R in today, connected my DLP large screen TV and DTV's DVR into the UPS ports. When I turned on my surround sound processor (which was not plugged into the APC), my TV turned off. I did not expect the UPS to work because it had not fully charged up yet, but apparently the TV was tripped because it was drawing more power and the APC could not handle it. The same sequence does not cause any problems when I plug my TV into my $10 surge strip (which may not really be working anymore it's old). The pathetic response, aftter a long wait from APC's tech support was that 'you know this model does not support a large screen TV'. Yes I was supposed to know that. No more purchases from this company.
Customer Review: Power Backups for Electrical Devices Summary: 5 Stars
I bought one of these UPS backups for my computer long ago and during
power loss its always worked quite well. Now since the pricing is so nice
I've decided to buy 3 more for my very expensive color laser printer, 2 large HDTV's as well as the cable from my internet service provider.
Now, during power disruptions, I no longer have to go around the house to reboot my printer or have to wait for the cable set top boxes
to reboot from the cable company.
I also have not used the CD's that comes with them since power almost always comes back on within seconds. That software is designed to properly shut down the PC's in case the power outage is quite long. I have not done that just because I'm lazy plus I've heard that many times loading the software to shut down the computer can get complicated.
Other then that I highly reccomend investing in power backups and this particular item is terrific.
