Customer Review: Smells bad
Summary: 2 Stars

This item was purchased from Amazon on 10-07-09 for $195.12 + 16.82 tax. For the past five months it has emitted an irritating chemical odor for as long as it is turned on. The odor is irritating enough to induce symptoms that include soreness of the throat and nasal passages.

With the computer and all peripherals turned on, the battery backup load is reported as being 121 watts;
Estimated Battery time = 40 minutes
Remaining battery charge = 100%
Sensitivity is set to <88 and > 136 volts
Volts in and out = 124
Herz = 60

The odor emitted when this UPS is turned on is so offensive that I'm seriously considering investigating purchase of a UPS from another vendor.

Too bad, considering that my 10 year old APC BACK-UPS 650 is still performing yeoman service.

Customer Review: APC Let's You Disable the Annoying Buzzer.
Summary: 4 Stars

The Good:

If you ever been in an office environment when the power fails you know how annoying it is listening to dozens of Uninterruptible Power Supply buzzers. It's impossible to even think. We know the power is off already, we don't need the stupid buzzer. Thank you APC!!

APC Let's You Disable the Annoying Buzzer.

No universally loathed blue LED lights.

Automatically supported by the Mac OS, no driver software was necessary. Had to install drivers for Windows.

The not so good:

If you select the display to show Watts or backup time, several days later it returns to displaying the voltage. Hopefully this software bug will be fixed.

This AMERICAN Power Conversion (APC) unit is NOT made in America.

Customer Review: "The Bomb"
Summary: 5 Stars

This UPS is absolutely fantastic.
I've had these installed for about a dozen people in our engineering department for a couple of months. Previous UPS's had apparently had circuitry problems due to being undersized for the Dell Precision Workstations that they were attached to. This ups is capable of keeping the workstation and monitor up for better than 30 minutes and appears to handle quick brownouts and surges with no problem. The informative LED display on the front is handy for seeing what is going on with the unit without the need for loading additional software on the computer. The mute button on the front is a Godsend to quiet the incessant beeping when the power goes out.
We'll see how long the battery holds up but so far everything about it looks top shelf.

Customer Review: Great quality.. super expensive batteries
Summary: 4 Stars

APC makes good quality products but as many have noted there are two basic problems. First, they keep changing their line-up of products so that if you product dies when out of warrenty you probably have to buy a whole new UPS unit since APC would have dropped support for your model by then and even a simple and cheap replacment part would not be available. Second, their charge an arm and a leg for replacement batteries! It is insane.. but if you do your search online and do a careful study you can probably get the same type of battery (but different brand name on it) for a lot less.
Also, I never buy the BX/XS models as they rely on the battery for some voltage regulations and that dies out the battery faster. the RS models are worth the extra bucks I think.

Customer Review: Great UPS, but it throws off a good amount of heat
Summary: 4 Stars

Works great (and the software is decent), exactly as advertised, and the price is right. My only complaint would be that it runs fairly warm. If you are going to put this under your desk it will likely be too warm for comfort. It's not so hot that you can't touch it (you can easily rest your feet on it without burning or anything like that), but it's warm enough to raise the room/under desk temperature significantly if you don't have a good source of cooling air. I ended up having to remove it from under the desk since it made it uncomfortable to work there. I guess I'd rate the heat output about equivalent to a 100 or 150 watt light bulb that being on (nothing scientific in that rating, just about what it feels like).
