Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of APC BACK-UPS RS BR1500LCD 1500VA/865W UPS SystemCustomer Review: Watch Manufacture date and other things Summary: 2 Stars
This is not so much a review of the APC item but rather Amazon's sellers. I originally ordered this item in early April. It arrived late April. When I opened the box it was clearly NOT NEW. ALL NEW APC UPSes come with a large yellow label informing the user to connect the positive terminal as this needs to be disconnected in shipping. The plastic wrap is always securely around the power cord, this unit (and its replacement did not have either of these. Furthermore, there is always an inspection register tape showing date of manufacture and software version as well as several tests the unit should have passed. This tape is supposed to be neatly taped to the bottom of the unit.
In both shipments (remember one was a replace for the first one about which I complained) the items were scratched. The plastic was not properly wrapped and there was NO YELLOW label warning about connecting the positive power terminal. Finally both register tapes showing date of manufacture were over three years old. The first one read 2006 the second was 2008.
To Amazon's credit they replaced the first one very quickly and paid for return shipping. I have simply requested a full refund on the second one as it seems that I am not going to get a NEW unit. Twice is my limit for trying.
Basically look over the packaging very carefully and check all the items I mentioned in this review.
Customer Review: Good Backup Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this to replace an APC XS1000 that had a battery died after 6 years. I am getting it a new battery and different use. The display was the main reason for the upgrade, and a good price. Just to make it clear to everyone up front the BR1500LCD and BX1500LCD are the same. As someone else stated here after some digging. BR and BX has differences only in the non LCD versions. Here is my APC chat.
Manju: Hi, how may I help you?
Robert: I ordered a apc rs1500lcd and received a xs1500lcd from a vendor. They say they are the same. Is this true or does the rs have more features on the LCD models. The FAQ does not say.
Manju: Robert, both the unit are same. XS series is for retail sales only, and it is not listed on the APC web site. But you would avail all the warranty benefits and services as any other Unit which is sold from APC directly.
Robert: so niether has the TRIM ability?
Robert: only BOOST?
Manju: Robert, please hold a moment.
Robert: okay, thanks
Manju: Robert, both the units have Boost Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR).
Robert: Okay, thanks.
Manju: You are welcome!!
Manju: Is there any thing else I can assist you with?
Robert: Nope. thanks for your help.
Manju: Goodbye and have a nice day!!
I have 6 APC UPS of varying types and they run fine. See Ocampo's review for a more in depth review.
Customer Review: Good reserve power - Common and Cheap replacement batteries! Summary: 5 Stars
Normally I stay far away from APC UPS units due to them using rare and expensive batteries. It's because of this that I normally use Belkin units as the batteries are cheaply replaced, and at times, upgraded. With UPS units that see use, battery replacement is a matter of when, not a matter of if.
This unit uses what I consider the "standard" 12v 9ah battery. They can also use the smaller 12v 7.5ah batteries too. The unit takes 2 batteries to get to its 24v requirement, and it's not uncommon to be able to pick up 4 of the batteries for $60. That's a replacement cost of $30 per UPS! I'm sure APC will want you to pay $80 or so for their rebranded batteries though. I didn't realize which batteries it took until after the purchase, something that made it even that more reassuring.
The LCD is a neat feature, but I'd be willing to get $5 back if they decided to delete the feature. It's not needed as UPS software displays this information, and it's also not something you really need to monitor. There are really no variables that the user can change, so if it works, it does, if not, nothing you can do about it. This unit is for my TV setup, which includes a HTPC. ALL major electronics should be protected by a UPS.
Power issues are the #1 thing to kill electronics, ESPECIALLY computers.
Customer Review: Excellent UPS For Use with the Mac Pro 8-Core Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased the APC 1500LCD for use with a new 8-core Mac Pro. On start up the Mac Pro uses up to or in excess of 300 watts which is a heavy load for most UPS units. The BR1500LCD handles this load with no problems. After booting and in normal use I am drawing about 210-230 watts which is about a 25% load on the UPS and gives me 22 minutes of run time off the UPS battery.
I chose this UPS because I like the various readouts given by the LCD display including output voltage, output frequency, input voltage, number of electrical events (power disruptions) estimated run time under current load, current load in watts, and current load as a percentage of the UPS maximum output. With a computer like the 8-core Mac Pro this is all useful information.
I actually liked this UPS so much that I bought a second one from Amazon just for the Apple 30 in. Cinema Display and the peripherals that I have attached to this Mac Pro.
One more thing that impressed me is that both of these UPS units came with a full charge on the battery so they do not sit around long at Amazon.
I would have given the UPS a 5-star rating if APC would simply make a replacement battery for it available on their web site.
Highly recommended for heavy loads.
Customer Review: Rock-solid, set it & forget about it! Summary: 5 Stars
I have always liked APC products ... I had another backUps that was starting to die (after 12-years and a couple of battery changes).
I got tired of that and decided it was time to buy another one. I paid $198.23 ... HEY, how 'come it's cheaper now!!
Anyway, the LCD red backlit display is very informative ... you don't really need that info. (but it looks cool). I searched reviews high-and-low (& prices, too). APC/Amazon had the answer. Free shipping on such a heavy beast is a great deal!
If you want peace of mind for gear protection ... this unit does the job well. I have a lot of money invested in a music studio and it is well worth the money for the protection that these items bring to the table. I experience quite a few power outages and power bumps in our area, and it (in my opinion) is absolutley a necessity to have my equipment protected by a UPS system.
I know it isn't very fun to buy things like this ... it just sits under the table ... you can't play with it, but it WILL protect you from the evil electrons that may enter and leave your house without warning.
If you care about your investment (computers, TVs, stereos, entertainment systems, etc.) get one before you regret it!
