Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of USB A4TECH Multimedia Slim Keyboard Silver Low Profile CompactCustomer Review: Serves it purpose well Summary: 4 Stars
Nice little keyboard -- does what it promises & serves its purpose well. I have a big Microsoft wireless keyboard for my home office (I work from home most days), which is a great keyboard, but it took up my desk's entire keyboard tray, so I had to place the mouse up on the desktop. This was too high & too far over to the right and as a result I began to have pain in my elbow & shoulder. I ordered the A4 Tech Mini Slim keyboard because its small size would allow me to put the mouse back down onto the keyboard tray.
My requirements were:
1. Small enough to fit the mouse & keyboard on my keyboard tray. CHECK!
2. Inexpensive. CHECK!
3. Decent reviews from other owners. CHECK -- the only major concerns I saw was occasional key sticking, the placement of the Enter key, and some people thought it was *too* small.
Overall, I've been very pleased with my new keyboard.
THE ONLY REASON I DIDN'T GIVE A "5-Star" RATING: As mentioned in another review or two, the Enter key is indeed shaped oddly ("L"-shaped rotated 180 degrees). The first few days, I often hit the nearby Backslash key when I intended Enter. This had the potential of being a show-stopper since I could not seem to train myself to hit Enter properly. However, I downloaded a key-mapping freeware utility that allowed me to map Backslash to Enter. I was hopeful that this would not cause problems because there are *two* Backslash keys (seems odd for such a small keyboard). However, the utility I used could not distinguish between the two keys and mapped them *both* to Enter. Thus, I no longer have a Backslash (or Pipe ("|"), which is the shifted version of Backslash). The workaround for this is to use the Windows On-Screen Keyboard utility whenever I need to type a Backslash or Pipe. Some people might find this unacceptable, but I don't use those characters much, so it's not a big deal for me.
Other random observations:
-- The keys are big enough & spaced properly, although the layout was different enough from my Microsoft keyboard that it took a little getting used to -- a few days of fumble-fingering.
-- I haven't experienced any key sticking other than occasionally I'll hit the Z key off-center and when I do, it doesn't depress easily.
-- There are 7 buttons at the top of the keyboard that perform browser functions like Home, Back, Refresh, etc. It would have been great if those were programmable (like on my Microsoft keyboard), but they aren't.
-- There's no numeric keypad, but I knew this up front & deemed it an acceptable compromise to get the small size.
-- The product shipped & was received on time, and the product & box were in excellent condition. There is no manual either in the box or online.
Overall, the keyboard is serving me well and, while less convenient than my bigger keyboard, I have no major issues and it has really helped my ergonomics issue.
