Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of 3Dconnexion SpaceNavigator PE (Personal Edition) 3D Navigation Device USB ( 3DX-700029 )Customer Review: Useful gadget Summary: 3 Stars
I read about this gadget when I started to use SecondLife. However, I decided to buy it after I saw a demo of how to use it with a protein visualization software (http://www.cgl.ucsf.edu/chimera/). The SpaceNavigator deliver a level of control unparallel by any other device I have used. In addition to the mouse, it allows for a very intuitive control of proteins and electron densities. I own a Griffin 1100-PWRMTS PowerMate/USB Multimedia Controller and Input Device which a more versatile input device. The SpaceNavigator DOES NOT replace my Powermate but actually complements it further. The Spacenavigator is a tool useful only for 3D applications (eg. Maya) and, as I mentioned above) cannot be easily used with other applications. I would certainly recommend it with the above date in mind. For more general use, the PowerMate is still is king.
Customer Review: nice and useful tool, but limited support Summary: 4 Stars
I got this piece of ahrdware to make my job easier, and in facts it works fine with Poser 7 (after the second update, otherwise it will not be recognized by poser); it require a little bit of practice, then if you pass the initial disorientation, it works amazingly well, for an item that cost less than 100 dollars.
The issue taht i have is that the support for the software is somehow limited; you need particular plugins for 3dsmax, cinema 4d and similar, then the support is not even for all the versions of the software, but only for some of them (the technical support told mne that they are planning to add more support, but at the moment whatever they have is in the drivers that is possible to get from their website).
If you get it be sure that your version of the software support it; otherwise tehre is nothing to enjoy, except a nice item to put on the desk, with a soft blue light.
Customer Review: Wonderfully versatile device! (when used with RBC9 driver) Summary: 5 Stars
This device is well built. It is heavy to ensure that it does not slide around. It has nice blue lights, although a bit too bright. It has a very smooth 6-axis mechanism, that can be a bit too sensitive. With the manufacturer supplied drivers, it can only be used with about 100 applications; most that the average use will never use. As supplied, it rated 2/5.
However, when used with the compact RBC9 driver, it can be infinitely adjusted for use with nearly all programs. It can be used to bind to multiple keyboard commands, mouse movements, and joystick even. When used with Firefox and extensions such as NextPlease, you can easily navigate long, multiple pages with a mere tilt. Sensitivity is adjustable as well. There is no limit to what you can do. This may be very helpful to those suffering from RSI / carpal tunnel as you can offload work to the opposite hand naturally. Wonderful device!
Customer Review: Great Product Summary: 4 Stars
This is a great device for anyone that does 3D modeling or 3D Cad work. Use in your left hand in concert with your mouse in the right hand makes for a really fast working space. It really speeds things up. The only reason I did not give this the full 5 stars is because this product does not come with any support. Not even email. You can only post a question on their forum and hope someone answers the question. I have been having trouble with the two keys not maitaining their settings. If you buy the SE of this item, it comes with support. The only difference between the Personal Edition (PE) and the Standard Edition (SE) is price and support. The SE version is about $98 and included support while the PE is about $50 and does not include support. The hardware is identical. As such the PE edition is not licensed for commercial use.
Customer Review: 3* if using it with the standard drivers, 5* if using open source drivers Summary: 5 Stars
3Dconnexion SpaceNavigator PE (Personal Edition) 3D Navigation Device USB ( 3DX-700029 )
Very cool looking device with the blue leds, allows u to switch them off if u find them irritating. Its not goin to be worth it if u r jus using it for google earth. But I found an open source driver written by a talented programmer on the 3dconnexion forums and the $50 price tag was immediately justified. With open source community support for this device, the potential for this peripheral is unlimited. I use it for surfing and gaming on top of the officially supported software. Please make sure to register with the 3dconnxion forums when u install the product. Aiming for the spacepilot or spacetraveller when i can get the cash together.
